Bruce Arians: Cardinals not changing, will let Ryan Lindley 'sling it'

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/p...s-not-changing-will-let-ryan-lindley-sling-it

Bruce Arians might tailor the game plan to what Ryan Lindley does best and likes to run, but the Arizona Cardinals won’t look any different than the first 14 weeks this season.

“We won’t change,” Arians said Tuesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “We try not to change who we are.

“To me, it’s, ‘Alright, Ryan, here’s the plan. There’s enough stuff here, give me some shots that you really like and are very comfortable with.’ I think for me, putting him in a comfort level is huge. That’s what separates some coaches who would just say, ‘Hey, you got to play this system.’ We’ll fit the system.”

Arians stressed the importance of making Lindley as comfortable as possible. Like he did with Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton earlier this season, Arians will let Lindley script certain plays against Seattle so he's running what he’s comfortable with.

Lindley was “on fire” during Arizona’s bonus practice on Monday, Arians said.

On “Pardon the Interruption” Tuesday afternoon, Arians said the Cardinals’ game plan will be built around Lindley’s strengths. But they won’t ask the third-year quarterback to simply manage the game.

“No, we don’t do any of that game-management stuff,” Arians said on PTI. “We’re going to sling it.”

I'm a bit more confident in Lindley this time around than I was in 2012. For two years, he has been surrounded by much better coaching in terms of quarterback development, which includes his time in San Diego under Mike McCoy, who I think is one of the best in the business in terms of developing and getting the most out of every quarterback (heck, he made Tim Tebow semi-productive).

Even last week, while the results didn't show, he appeared more comfortable in the pocket and made better decisions. This was with no first-team reps. It also helps to have a halfway decent offensive line, unlike in 2012.

Additionally, I'm curious to see what his deep ball looks like in comparison to Palmer and Stanton. Really, his only strength coming out of SDSU was that he had a cannon. It was hardly ever displayed when he played with Whiz and Miller as they mainly called for short slants.

I'm not expecting much from him, and didn't like him at all in the draft, but he has more experience and coaching than two years ago.

Just as long as he isn't slinging interceptions. We are going to have to score at least twice to win so maybe he gets lucky with a couple of bombs.

:yeahthat:

This is what I have been saying almost exactly. Under different (way better) coaching will give him a better chance to play to his strengths. I remember watching him at SDSU and he had a cannon. I was pretty excited to when the Cards drafted him because he has a lot of potential. Think he was thrown in to early when the QB mess happened. He was definitely not ready to play in NFL. Hopefully, now will be different!

There is a black and white fundamental difference in the approach Arians is taking and the approach Whiz took with Lindley. Arians will develop a game plan that maximizes his abilities. Not trying to force Lindley to manage "the system" has to bring about better results than Whiz got, and that really should go without saying.

Well look at the bright side of Lindley slinging it. If they make sure they are all 50 to 60 yards down the field....it's about as good as a punt if it gets picked.

What a golden opportunity for this kid. I might be getting delirious after all of our success this season, but I think Lindley is going to surprise everyone for at least THIS Sunday.

This is not the unprepared season from hell under Whis, he has a home crowd, great WRs, a much improved OL, and the kid always had an arm... I think Lindley will surprise too :)

I hope lindley lights it up

When Arians came in and released hoyer and kept lindley I thought it was a mistake. In his one start I swore he looked poised in the pocket and was actually going through progressions. Obviously Hoyer isn't the second coming - his feet were terrible in the game before he was benched. I would like nothing more than to watch lindley have a solid game. 1TD and no picks 55% completion rating will win this game....

LOL...If Lindley is going to "sling it" this Sunday, we all need to be prepared to lose the turnover battle and possibly have the Cardinals beat the Cardinals.

Now, before people jump on me, I'm not saying the Cardinals can't win an ugly game, but there is a reason Lindley was available and hasn't thrown a TD in his career. Designing a game plan to what Lindley does best might be designing a game plan to do not a whole lot. He isn't good and he is going against a defense that is. It isn't going to be pretty, but that doesn't mean a win can't happen. It just isn't likely.

This is Arians telling Lindley to play relaxed and with confidence.

Doubt the game plan has Lindley throwing it 35+ times

This is people management 101. Instead of focusing on the negative on a struggling employee, he is building him up that he can do exactly what his peers do. He can be the team superstar.

Stuff like this is why you hear players want to play for Arians.

This is all coaching but it's kind of BS at the same time.

You can't change what a QB is. BA didn't change Stanton's completion percentage at all. Not one iota. It's the same now as it was his whole playing time in other places. He didn't improve this dudes accuracy at all.

He won't change Lindleys either, because Lindley and Stanton both suck huge balls.

What he can do is game plan to give his QBs shots they're comfortable with when it matters. I truly believe all those plays we hate sometimes set up other plays. BA stacks plays together, sees how you react, and then goes deep off it for one big play.

BA runs plays off one another, and how you react one time dictates what he does off it another. But that doesn't change Stanton or Lindley. They both are not very good.

And in this game I think we need to make drives and get first downs. Otherwise in the 4th quarter it'll be brutal, once again, because our defense will be so gassed they will steamroller us.

I'm not buying the Lindley can win games scenario. He sucks. And 1 long play won't win it. I will say though, if he can stretch the D and complete a couple long ones, so we can run... Maybe.

This could get ugly quick. No way in hell anyone will get me to believe in that guy.

Our coach has major stones though.
