Roger Goodell
The man's "legacy" is blowing up in his face.
Let's look at his amazing influence on the game.
1. Makes a bunch of ridiculous rules that no person can abide by in order to make the game safer because a group of people didn't realize smashing their head over and over again is bad for them. I.E. - can't lead with your head, defenseless receiver, etc., etc.
2. Makes a bunch of ridiculous rules in the passing game that ensures that defenses cannot do diddly squat unless the QB and receivers really screw it up.
3. Makes himself the kind of football, and declares to the land his own judgements on plays during the game, and what is deemed bad behavior.
4. The combination of items #1, and #2 has resulted in a completely different game that is now 80% passing, and is almost a passing skeleton practice. With defenders that cannot touch, or hit their opponents too hard. Not to mention that, every single play, you have fans looking for flags. How many games are won on ticky-tack pass interference, defensive back holding, or roughing the QB penalties ? Look no further than yesterday's Cardinals vs. Giants game. The whole 1st half was who got more penalties. This is football ?
5. I understand the argument is to increase scoring and offense, but is it really doing that, or just implementing more penalties into the game, and more control to the refs ?
6. I also understand the argument of trying to keep players healthy and on the field. But, for all the rule changes that are trying to limit contact in the game that hurts players, it is in effect changing the game (for the worse, IMO) and the result is that players still get hurt, still miss time, etc., etc.
7. Now speaking on King Goodell and his ridiculous one-man judge and jury system. Where to start. He is punishing players for certain hits, to the point of suspensions that are up to two games, maybe more, and that doesn't bring into accounts fines. Yet, for all he is doing to try and keep players healthy, and more importantly on the field, he has instituted his player conduct policy and had the supreme arrogance that by himself he was going to "police" his league. Our own congress and its 200+ years of existence has struggled to find a way to properly police the country, and Goodell think he can do better ? Well, he can't. We have already seen it with the Ray Rice situation, and even the drug policies that are WAY more controversial than the main stream media makes them out to be. The guy is in way over his head. He is Icarus flying towards the sun.
8. So what does that leave us with ? You have an entitled arrogant arse who has changed things in the game, that did not need to be changed, but were implemented anyway so he could have his stamp on the league. Yet, for all the rule changes he has made concerning the play on the field, in order to protect players, he has negated it by enforcing this ridiculous player conduit system. Thus the players he is trying to keep on the field by changing the game on the field, are now not on the field anyway because of the rules he has created for off-field behavior. Leaving the league with the same issue of not having star players on the field, but now with rules that changed the way the game is played on the field for the worse. And, creating an atmosphere where in the game of football, one of the absolute basic foundations of the game, the tackle, is now a mystery of how it is properly done. Do defenders even know what they are allowed to do ? Is that being properly officiated and regulated ? Does anyone else find it INSANE the league is trying to regulate a nano-second occurrence that is asking people to tackle without their head touching anything ? This is the NFL and professionals don't know how to tackle anymore. All for the sake of player safety, which is to keep players on the field, which doesn't happen because the league' judicial system is so screwed up.
9. Should the NFL be punishing players for off-field behavior ? Yes. No doubt about it. But, the arrogance that is has been handled with to this point has to stop. This is bigger than the NFL thinks it is, and takes more than one person. It was ridiculous to think one person could handle it. There is too much money and power in this business to excuse the ignorance and arrogance shown.
10. As for play on the field ? Some thought, and logic would be nice. Some acceptance of the game for what it is would be nice. It's football. There are injuries and tackling, and that is the reality of it. I am all for educating players on the risks better, but once the risks are laid out and signed off on. Then its up to the player to decide on what risks he wants to take. This ticky tack BS has to stop. It is ruining the game. I want to get excited about the next big play, not the next big penalty.
11. Finally as for keeping players on the field. I bet the NFL would be longing for the days where Adrian Peterson was out with an injury, and not out for a controversial off-field issue, that brings massive amount of negative press to the league, and gets potential non-football fans attentions in a negative way.
Good job Mr. Goodell, some legacy.
Change for the sake of change, and making your name are HUGE mistakes that I have seen happen in the modern world, time and time again.
Sometimes you just got to leave well enough alone, and enjoy it. Change will come, since nothing lasts forever, and all good things come to an end. Goodell went out looking for problems, instead of waiting for them to come to him, now he is over whelmed, and in a downward spiral.
Sucks to be him, but he did this to himself. I hope he gets fired.
