The more I go over this draft the more I hate the thought of selecting a guy in the top 5 considering, that I don't think there's a "special" guy who's a difference maker outside of the top 4, how much he will get paid (CBA depending), blah blah blah, etc. etc. There are plenty of holes that the Cards need to fill and I think getting as many picks in the top 100 is a good strategy for filling them.

IMO the logical option is to trade down.

There are a couple of options if I'm understanding this chart and the value attached to each pick.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2410670

#1 desirable option (New England): #5 for #17, #28, and #124.

The Pats might do it for a couple of prospects that they think will turn out. Their OLBs aren't anything special, though Spikes and Mayo inside are pretty good. A Von Miller would be extremely attractive to the Pats who didn't get a single sack in the post season.

Wilfork is getting up there in years and Dareus might be an attractive replacement.

AJ Green even could end up falling and that would give the Pats a traditional big play reciever which they really don't have.

#2 (Minnesota): #5 for #12, #43, and #167

The Vikings do this to get their QB of the future. By leapfrogging Washington they get first dibs on QBs, letting them pick from Gabbert, Newton, Mallet, etc. because Washington has made it pretty obvious they're going after a QB in round 1.

#3 (San Diego):#5 for #18, #50, #61

San Diego does it because they could use help along the D-Line and the front half of the 1st is stacked with talent.

I don't see any of those teams wanting to make those trades but if I am the Cards I would make the first two.

I'm on the fence about this topic. I think there are some possible game changers to be had with the 5th pick but at the same time would love to add 2 second rounders. I'll have to think about it more.

Also possibly look for Tenn to move up. If the get wind that other teams are wanting to move up for a QB (Gabbath) then you might see them pull the trigger too.

I'd be against this for anything but the second option you listed with Minnesota. Moving back from a top 5 pick to anything past 15 without some kind of amazing compensation is absolutely not worth it to me.

I've said it in other threads, but I'm a firm believer that an elite talent is much more important than multiple "good" talents. Unless you're completely rebuilding, which I don't think we are.

If there isn't a labor agreement before the Draft, and thus no FA movement, I see the following happening:
1. All the "have nots" will look to trade back, as they have more holes to fill, which they can't fill in FA, and will need more picks.
2. All the "haves" (well at least some of the 'haves') will end up with some of the elite players in the Draft, by moving up.

Who will benefit the most? I have no idea, but do expect, under this scenario, to see LOTS of draft day deals.

Me. I'm in for a trade down. Draft seems to have better value further down.

If Patrick Peterson is there. Then no. If not then it is a possibility.

It really comes down to taking a chance on Von Miller if Peterson isn't there.

I think everyone wants to trade down. The question is will anyone want to trade up?

The only team I can think of is Detroit. They desperately need a corner and they may move up to get Amakumara.

If there's no "special guy" a difference maker a #5, why would anyone trade up?

I'd make any of these trades, it would give us extra 2nd rounders to trade for someone like Kolb or Orton (I think either will end up costing about a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder). It would also still let us have a 1st round pick.

The downside is, there is no real reason for these teams to move up for the same reason we want to move down.

Could have had Dallas Clark and Nick Barnett or Larry Johnson. The reason that trade-down didn't work is because we drafted Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace
