Adam Caplan/Scout.com - Browns quarterback Derek Anderson could be released by the team before March 19.

Adam Caplan wrote on his Twitter page Monday that Anderson's $2 million roster bonus is due on March 19.

What do you guys think? When hes had some protection, Anderson can be a pretty good QB. Worth a shot if released?

He'd be worth a shot as a back up but the guy has no shot beating out Leinart. He was awful last season--his game against Buffalo might be the worst start by a starting QB in years (2 of 17 23 yards)--but hey the Browns won the game 6-3 LOL.

Yes, he has the skills to be a good passer. At worse, he is a skilled back up.

as a last resort it wouldn't be the end of the world, but he shouldn't be at the top of the list for backups.

When the Browns made the playoffs two years ago, the Browns came into UoP stadium and allmost upset us on the last play of the game. Anderson was outstanding in that game. He's fallen off a great deal since...but we have good experience with cast offs. :D

Maybe I'm biased because he killed my fantasy team when I had to use him on a bye week, but I have no interest in Anderson. He's never completed over 56.5% of his passes in a year, which is worse than Matt's completion percentage in his rookie season. Actually, much like Grossman, Anderson only really has half of a solid season to his credit. He fell off in the second half of '07 and hasn't been the same since.

No, he sucks. Browns fans weren't even high on him the year he went to the Pro Bowl. They saw through the smokescreen.

I don't even know if I'd want him over BSP. At least BSP knows the system.

On the cheap ?

Heck yeah. He is only 26 years old, he is 6'6", 230 lbs. played for the god awful Browns, and Whiz has proven he can work with a turnover prone QB's & "fix" the problem.

But I think another team is going to sign him to some ridiculously expesive contract.

i'd take a look at him. He's about as good as any backup QB that can be brought in. If you're going to bash him for last year, you have to give him credit for his good year as well.

I wouldn't mind if we signed him, because that, IMO, would mean the coaches/scouts see 'something' in him. And I trust the team more than the fans. If we don't go after him, than the fans are right.

How many other backup QB's are we going to get with a Pro Bowl on their resume in the last three years? He has a dynamite arm and I think Kurt Warner himself would have looked like garbage on the woeful Browns. He shouldn't be judged by a windy game in Buffalo with a crap offense around him.

I would definitely take a flyer on him. I love me some Pac-10 QB's.

Just more proof why the pro bowl doesnt matter when talking about a players ability.

The year he went to the pro bowl he threw for a woefull 56 completion percentage and bad INT to TD ratio.

I laughed my butt off after they gave him his new contract because he wasnt a good QB then and he isnt a QB now.

I think it's unfair to judge Anderson at this point too. 29 TD in less than one year is pretty good back when he went to the pro-bowl.

I have my concerns about his sustained success since much of his production that year was early and he started to fade as the season went on, but we are talking about a guy who was getting his first real shot.

This year he was running a new <ahem> "system", if you can call it that. Add to that, Winslow & Edwards were gone. Doesn't sound like much, you might say but they were each 1,000+ yard receivers in '07 and combined for 21 of Anderson's 29 TD. Also, Lewis was a 1,300 yard RB in '07 with 11 total TD. In '09 he was a 30 year old, 500 yard, 0 TD RB.

My point is, the offense that Anderson had a pretty decent amount of success in was completely gone in '09. He may not be a QB who will succeed in any environment but if he's put into a system that caters to his strengths...he's certainly got some upside.

I don't think he's a WCO QB at all and I don't think Mangini's offense is particularly QB friendly AND I worry about his accuracy so I'm not advocating him for the Cardinals at this point. He might actually work in the offense that the new Cardinals evolve into but there's no way to know what that might be at this moment. If it's a strong running game designed for a pocket passer, then Anderson might be a good #2 and potential starter.

Less then 1 year????

He played in all 16 games. And had something like 20 INT's to go with those 29 TD's.

Then how do you explain the 2008 season, with the same system, pretty much the same players, and a brand spankin new highly paid contract.

I played in a city league slow pitch softball game against him once. It started to rain and we were all shocked he stayed out and played the field was extremely wet and slippery and I couldn't believe he would risk running around in a softball game three weeks before camp was due to open. The guy couldn't hit to save his life but he sure could throw he threw it from left field to home plate without an arc are bouncing it. Anyways he was very friendly with everyone and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Oh yeah and we lost so I definitely don't want him playing for the Cardinals.:D

Yeah, I thought he didn't get much of a chance to play in the first game that year but 28 attempts shouldn't be counted as a partial game.
And had something like 20 INT's to go with those 29 TD's.
He had 19. A 3.6% INT rate is not alarming. It's on the high side but nothing that couldn't be improved upon.

I don't even know what you think I'm saying. The Browns drafted a QB in the first round and started 4 different guys at the position in '08 for a coach on the hot seat.

Anderson struggled but still threw more TD's than INT's. We are talking about a backup with potential to start aren't we?

It seems to be forgotten that we're talking about a backup QB here. People don't want to bring Anderson in yet some would rather just go with BSP,who, if i'm not mistaken, just completed his first pass in a NFL game this past year. The first of his 7 year career.

The Browns didnt make the playoffs that year the tied at 10-6 with Pitt but Pitt beat them 2x that year. They played an very weak schedule that year, the only games against winning teams they lost, Pit and NE. He threw 4 picks in a week 16 14-19 loss to Cincinatti, that kept them out of the playoffs.
