I hate to interrupt the McClain love fest --

but I think Brandon Spikes of Florida will be better, and more likely available at 26

Well I don't share that opinion but since McClain won't be available Spikes would be a fine alternative.

A few of my really close friends are big Gator fans (Gator grads) and they all have warned me off of Spikes. Said he is never, ever going to make it in the pros--doesn't have the head for it. I'll choose to believe them on this one.

I dont think he's better, but I have been and will continue to monitor him as he is definitely one of the 15 or so guys I am really intrigued by at this point. It would be really great if his little character issue dropped him to us in the second. I can definitely see it happening after watching Maualuga (sp?) fall last year.

Give me a draft that involves getting Jerry Hughes, Eric Norwood in the first and second...and A.J. Edds and Pat Angerer in later rounds and I'll be happy. I just have my doubts Rolando falls to us.

Couple that with the Pats not franchising Wilfork and us being able to work something out to bring him here ;)

Spikes is falling fast. Character issues and lack of speed have turned a lot of teams off (from what I understand). Kiper even mentioned (I know many hate Kiper) that he could possibly fall to the 3rd or 4th round. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. His 40 time is going to be HUGE for him.

There is no good reason to draft a ILB in the first round when we could get less hyped one in the middle rounds who can be just as good. I'd rather get Joe Pawelek in the 3rd and develop him for one year, guy could be the next Barrett Ruud imo. Team needs to draft Brandon Graham in the 1st, a CB and LT in the 2nd assuming we get a 2nd for Boldin and of course a ILB in the 3rd. The rest of the draft should be focused on getting a WR to replace Urban(Shipley?) and depth at key defensive positions.

1. Late-first day and middle round MLBs are often solid, but seldom comparable to the studs that go in the 1st. Think Gerald Hayes, Poz or Dan Connor in comparison to Dansby, Beason or Willis. I like Pawelek(and would be very happy with him in the 3rd), but he would step in right away. We dont have time to develop anyone, since Dansby's gone and the WIL in a 3-4 is an easy transition IMO.

2. Yes on Brandon Graham and the 2nd round CB and LT.

3. No on drafting a replacement for Urban. First off, he' sin the top 5, if not the best overall, #4 receivers in the game. Everyone can't be like Fitz. In the strange event that the team really feels it necessary to replace him (they wont), you dont draft to fill a backup position (other than the occasional backup QB). Every guy you draft has to be with the hope of him eventually filling a starting spot. You can find a 4th or 5th wideout after the draft or on the waiver wire/FA. With that said, if they drafted a return specialist here and he ended up ahead of Urban on the depth chart I wouldn't complain.

4. Rounds 4-7 should be spend solely upon the defensive BPA IMHO. If we can nab two guys there who end up making the team then it was a success.

I think the wildcard this year could be seeing us grab a late TE.

Pawelek would be decent pick up, but not in the 1st 3 rounds IMO. Maybe the 4th if we dont take one earlier. But I echo the sentiments of MD.

More info on Pawelek, he is playing in the east west shrine game this week. Practice started today I think. Not sure why the NFL network doesnt cover this week like they do the senior bowl week?

Anyways some other interesting east west shrine game prospects -

Cord Howard - OG - Georgia Tech
Kyle Calloway - OT - Iowa ***I really like this guy, might be in my top 3 OT's of this draft***
Greg Hardy - DE - Mississippi - How far has this guy fallen?
Kam Chancellor - S - Virginia Tech
Max Hall - QB - BYU
Dennis Pitta - TE - BYU
Devin Ross - CB - Arizona

Dansby was a 2nd round pick.

Jermain Gresham would be a nice pick as well.

My current targets at 26:

Brandon Spikes
Jermain Gresham
Terrance Cody
Jerry Hughes

I was watching Brandon Spikes vs. Ronaldo McClain. Spikes just doesn't attack the line of scrimmage like McClain does. He sits there (which in some cases is a good thing), but seems to never attack the ball carrier. So he'll will get a tackle on the RBs often, but often will be a gain of 5-6 yards.

The players I hope we can get either by dropping to us or trading up woudl be Clausen, Bradford, Gresham, Hughes, McClain, or Haden. Honestly Gresham would be a luxury pick so I doubt we do it, but man he looks talented and an elite TE would be good for our next QB.

I think LB Sean Weatherspoon would be a great fit for us. He could play inside or outside.

I agree, bg7brd. I am also intrigued with Navorro Bowman of Penn. St. I think the Cardinals board at #27 will look like this:

1. Sergio Kindle (6-4, 255, Texas).

2. Sean Weatherspoon (6-2, 245, Missouri).

3. Navorro Bowman (6-1, 230, Penn. St.).

4. Eric Norwood (6-1, 252, South Carolina).

McClain is a top ten pick and I think Jerry Hughes will be off the board by the early 20s...so will Kindle, IMO, as will Jason Pierre-Paul. The pass rushers will go fast.

Thus, I think you are right on with Weatherspoon.

Dansby was a 2nd round pick.

He was the first pick of the second round and he fell from projections in the teens. We got Dockett in the next round and he had been projected as a possible first round pick by many. Had Dennis Green not been running that draft we would've passed on both.

I like Gresham but 2 concerns, how well does he block, and how bad was that knee injury? But i have to admit watching Finley embarass our secondary in the Packers game sure had me wondering if Gresham were healthy what he could do on our team.

No way we spend our 1 rd draft pick on an TE
Will never happen

Never say never. I would be very upset is the Cards take a TE in rd1 unless FA was crazy kind to us.
