Diamondbacks sign Dan Haren to extension

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed pitcher Dan Haren to a two-year extension with a club option for a third season that could keep the right-hander in a Diamondbacks uniform through 2013, reports Sports 620 KTAR's John Gambadoro.

Haren has two years left on his current contract and the two additional years will be for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The deal is worth approximately $31 million dollars with the club option in 2013 worth $15.5 million dollars.

Haren is in his first season with the Diamondbacks after being acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Oakland Athletics in the off-season.

Haren is 12-5 with an ERA of 2.75, fourth in the National League, in 23 starts. He has pitched in 153.2 innings, striking out 142 batters while allowing only 24 walks. His 12 wins are tied for fifth in the NL, and his strikeout to walk ratio of 5.92 is tops in Major League Baseball among starters.

This probably means the end of Hudson in AZ. But at the same time I'm happy to see Haren getting extended. He has been absolutely fantastic this year and *should* be in the running for the Cy Young.

edit: Also, listening to Gambo and Ash, they are speculating that Webb may not be too interested in staying here. Instead, he may look for more money elsewhere. They were playing a few clips from a recent interview and Webb didn't sound to excited to remain in AZ.

I don't know if this means the end of Hudson - the money for Haren isn't until 2011/12/13

A Hudson deal should only be for 3 years, maybe 4. 3 years would be 2009/2010/2011.

Byrnes' albatross drops off after 2010, so that money would be available then.

Webbie is ours for two more seasons (2009, club option at 8.5 million for 2010 - no way club doesn't exercise that). A lot can happen between now and then.


But in the meantime, good job locking up Haren!!

Is it more money that's diminishing Webb's enthusiasm . . . or is it that management seems to be promoting Haren over him?

Webb now pitches the day after Haren. That was not necessary, even if it happened after the All Star Game. Haren could easily have been held out for one day to keep his #2 spot in the starting rotation.

I love having Dan Haren here, but there was nothing to be gained by moving him ahead of Webb. Webb finished 1-2 in the Cy Young the past two years.

What does a stupid move like that do? Well maybe it causes Webb to say that he wants to move on, huh.

The combination of two young guys like Webb and Haren at the top of the rotation is a big step toward, not winning a World Series, but winning a bunch of World Series.

Why does Melvin have to rock the boat?

I'll tell you why. I've worked with people who were so afraid to take charge and succeed that they did illogical things, over and over. Almost wishing for lack of respect, because that's what they feel about themselves.

I suggest that Bob Melvin, with his goofy lineup changes, no stolen bases or hit-and-run plays for two months and now this lack of leadership fits that category.

Case in point. Here's Melvin's latest quote about Justin Upton's return.

"I think he can probably start to be a little more aggressive in his swing."

Somehow, the need to say "think", "probably" and "little more" don't go with the word "aggressive".

Guys, the hedging in everything that Melvin says and does, that indecision, rolls downhill to the rest of the team.

For example, "He's ready to be more aggressive in his swing." would be a hell of a lot more inspiring than "I think", "probably" and "little more".

Today's reports say that the D'backs previously made Webb an extension offer, then pulled it.

We don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but if dropping Webb in the rotation behind Haren, then giving Haren an extension but pulling Webb's off the table is a negotiation tactic, maybe the fault goes beyond Melvin in this case.

As a fan, (A) I am not happy seeing an unhappy Brandon Webb and (B) a rotation built around Webb AND Haren is the way to more championships.

It's a business. The Dbacks and Webb's agent are circling each other. They will get the deal done. And how do you know Webb is unhappy? Looked pretty happy last night.

You are making much ado about nothing as far as the rotation spots. Webb benefited from an extra day rest, needed after pitching in the All-Star game two days after a game.

I'm confident it will get done and I think Gambo and Ash are just stirring the pot. Thats just Webb's Kentucky drawl and attitude. Hes easy going about EVERYTHING.

I say it gets done this offseason because the Organization knows Webby is the 'chise. This is just posturing right now. And a good ol Kentucky boy doesnt really care about playing in NY or BOS or anything like that so if they pony up the cash he'll stay.
