The Associated Press is reporting that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has resigned.

The AP cited an anonymous source as saying that Gibbs informed team owner Daniel Snyder early this morning that he was resigning with one year remaining on his contract.

Gibbs' second tenure ends with a 31-36 record.

Wonder if Russ Grimm will be a candidate??

I would agree that Snyder will probably look for a bigger name guy. After all, the two Washington Redskins coordinators are making more than many head coaches.

You make a good point. History shows that Snyder has gone with high profile coaches all the time and certainly is not afraid to throw money to all levels of coaching. Someone made a point about Williams..I know he coached in Buffalo, but I don't recall a head gig in Washington...he ain't high profile tho....but then again there are not too many of them around anymore...I guess Cowher is the only one who would make sense to fit the parameters...he is not going to be a testing ground for guys who have no coaching experience at the helm and no way does he go into the college ranks...unless he throws a Federal Reserve Bank at Pete Carroll who has two head coaching gigs at the pro leve.

On Mike and Mike this morning they were talking about the possibility of Snyder going after Cowher or Pete Carroll. Just speculation on their part, but they did agree that the USC guru would make a bigger splash for the redskins.

Holy crap. If that is true, Grimm won't be coaching there. I still feel he will be a HC somewhere next year.

Well other than Gregg Williams i would think Grimm is the favorite. And if thats the case you KNOW Snyder will throw a boatload of cash at Faneca.

I hope thats not how the dominos fall - but this is the Cardinals we cheer for after all.

Well.. Other than the fact that he spent 19 years as a Redskin (including 8 years as a coach), got his coaching start there, played under Gibbs who by all accounts is going to have a large say in who his replacement is, is someone who Dan Snyder is familar with having worked with him in the past and the fact that the Redskin fanbase loves the guy?

No real concrete proof... None at all.

I know noone wants Grimm to leave, but this is the reality of things-- the Cardinals improved this season. Grimm was very much responsible for that growth. He's been a head coaching candidate/coach in the waiting since 2004. His value now may be HIGHER than it was in Pittsburgh.. This job would be an ideal one for him, allows him to work with players he's by and large familar with, an organization he's VERY familar with and take over a team that has made the playoffs two of the last three seasons.

Weird how a man, Russ Grimm, who has never even been an offensive or defensive coordinator is suddenly thought by many to be the front runner for the head coaching job in Washington because he once played there for the coach who just failed in his comeback attempt and resigned.

My guesses and they are just opinionated guesses, are these:

No smart man will take the Skins job as long as Snyder is the owner.
Russ Grimm is a smart man.
