Buckeye Bits: Joins Kirk Barton and Doug Datish as the anchors of this year's offensive line ... played an iron-man like 340 minutes last year as the starter at right guard ... can also play the left side and could step in at tackle should the need arise ... made tremendous strides in 2005, especially during the second half of the season ... continued to excel in the spring and has improved in "all aspects of his game" in the view of offensive line coach Jim Bollman ... coaches like his competitiveness and fiery spirit ... is a hard worker and mentally tough football player ... plays quick and has quick hands ... has played in 24 games with 15 starts, 13 of which were Ohio State victories ... his father, Walter Downing was an All-American at Michigan.
2005 (Junior): Started all 12 games and played at least 30 minutes in each of those games with a high of 35 minutes at Penn State ... played the best football of his career the second half of the season when OSU put together a seven-game winning streak and was at its best offensively.
2004 (Sophomore): Appeared in 11 of the Buckeyes' 12 games (he did not play against Wisconsin) ... played 12 minutes at tackle in the season opener against Cincinnati in his first extended action of any kind ... first career start was at Michigan State at left guard ... also started the Michigan and Oklahoma State games ... all three of his starts were Ohio State wins ... played a career-high 34 minutes in the win over Michigan ... awarded his first varsity letter.
2003 (Freshman): Only appearance of the year came against Washington in the season opener when he logged three minutes of playing time.
2002 (Redshirt): Part of what many considered to be the top freshman class in the country.
High School: A three-year starter at tackle, claiming All-Ohio honors as a senior ... also started at defensive end for three years ... GlenOak made it to the state playoffs and finished with an 8-3 record his junior year (the school's first playoff appearance in 15 years) ... played baseball as a sophomore and junior (he played third), but did not play as a senior.
Personal: Is the son of Walter and Susan Downing ... after achieving All-America honors at Michigan, his father later played for the San Francisco 49ers and was a member of the team that defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI ... has an older sister, Kristen and a younger sister, Lauren ... enjoys traveling and lists Tokyo as the place he would most like to visit ... calls wrapping up a share of the Big Ten title at Michigan last year his biggest thrill as a Buckeye ... goals this year are to win all-conference honors and help the team capture the outright Big Ten and the national championships ... will graduate at the end of Winter Quarter.
