Cincinnati head coach Zac Taylor cut the Bengals’ minicamp short by a couple of days, saying they had accomplished everything they needed to at this point and he didn’t feel the need to continue any further. He said the combination of meeting work in April and the field work they’ve done in June made Taylor comfortable cutting it short.
It’s a growing trend in the NFL, as teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams have done the same thing. Taylor said the Rams and 49ers playing each other on Thursday to start the season likely played a factor.
Additionally, while neither Taylor, Sean McVay nor Kyle Shanahan would likely say it, an extended minicamp is, in large part, unnecessary for such veteran-heavy teams. There aren’t big chunks of any of the three rosters that need a long minicamp to learn the playbook.
With Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins leading the offense, the same offensive line returning for the second straight season, and a defense that added tons of veterans and has second-year players developing, there isn’t a huge need for the Bengals to overexert themselves for the sake of getting extra work in.
Many fans had a negative reaction to the news, fairly pointing out that a team that has missed the playoffs for three straight years shouldn’t be thinking of itself as too high and mighty to finish the final two days of minicamp.
However, much of what has the Bengals in the good graces of the fan base is going against the grain and railing against their natural inclinations.
A team that is usually conservative in player acquisition spent a ton of money and draft capital to bring in players who can plug and play and make a difference. Joe Burrow has departed from his calm, cool and collected self and taken on a much more public, out-front leadership role, even saying it gets to the point where he crosses the line into being straight-up mean.
Burrow is making big, bold predictions and claims, predicting Super Bowls, saying this is the best roster he’s played with in Cincinnati, and even saying Wednesday morning that this team reminds him of his 2019 LSU team at this point of the season.
At this point in the year, rest might overcome rust. Keep morale high and give the guys a few extra days off. Maybe going against the grain could pay dividends over the next couple of months.
