In 1987, Duke was moving towards Blue Blood status and Wake Forest was in the Bob Staack era which unfortunately for the Deacons, didn’t end well.

However, the Demon Deacons had a very dangerous weapon in Muggsy Bogues, the legendary 5-3 guard who would go on to a legendary 14-year NBA career.

And in January of 1987, Wake Forest was 0-6 in the ACC. Thing were not looking good.

Duke meanwhile had the great Tommy Amaker at point, paired with Quin Snyder, and also Danny Ferry, Billy King, John Smith, who became a surprisingly effective post presence despite being just 6-7, Robert Brickey, Alaa Abelnaby and Kevin Strickland.

It lined up to be an easy, blowout win for the Blue Devils.

Didn’t quite happen like that.

Wake Forest, led by the amazing Bogues, pushed Duke into overtime and were in the game until the very last play.

It was an inspired effort by the Deacs and Duke was lucky to survive.

Small surprise: in his later years as Duke coach anyway, Mike Krzyzewski did a handshake routine where he’d pat some guys on the shoulder and tap some guys on the chest. There was an interesting sort of rhythm to it.

In this game, when Coach K greets Bogues, he does something you don’t see very often: he hugs him, like the way you might hug a little brother that just impressed and surprised you. It was surprisingly cool.

Bogues had that sort of affect on people though. Just 5-3, he forced you to respect him.

JR Reid overlapped with him at UNC and they were later teammates on the Charlotte Hornets. Larry Johnson tells a story of how Reid found out that Bogues was also a high school wrestler and challenged him.

Johnson said Bogues had Reid on his head almost immediately.

As we said, you had no choice but to respect that man.
