Duke has had some amazing point guards over the years: the elegant Tommy Amaker, the steady and stoic Chris Duhon, the stunning defender Tre Jones, and the cerebral Jon Scheyer among them.
Of all of them, our favorite was Bobby Hurley, because he always seemed too small to do the things that he did. He could do them because he was daring and tough as nails, qualities that clearly run in his family.
However, the smartest, most clinical point guard we’ve seen at Duke was Jones’s big brother, Tyus.
The elder Jones was just wicked smart. People used to joke that Vince Carter was half man and half amazing. Well, you might say that Jones was half man, half computer chip, because he almost always made the right decisions.
We’ve talked before about how Scheyer the player could go for long stretches without an obvious mistake. The coaching staff no doubt saw many more than the rest of us would, but by any reasonable standard, Scheyer was brilliant.
Jones is his only Duke rival in that department, and keep in mind, while Scheyer led his team to a title as a senior, Jones won his as a freshman.
In the NBA, he has led the league several times in his assist/turnover ratio, and is always near the top of the league in that stat.
Actually, it’s kind of too bad the San Antonio Spurs didn’t have him this season. He would have been an ideal backup point guard, and when the young Spurs buckled under pressure, Jones would have kept the wheels from coming off.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
