The York Revolution has canceled its Pride Night game after several players declined to wear the event’s commemorative jerseys, the minor league baseball team announced Wednesday.
The York, Pennsylvania-based team was scheduled to host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday for its 11th annual Pride Night. The event’s activities, including music and batting practice, will continue at WellSpan Park with free admission, according to the team.
“The club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game,” the news release said.
The York Revolution Club is making a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center, an LGBTQIA+ advocacy group in York and Adams counties in Pennsylvania, to support its inclusivity work.
“This action by the players is completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York,” the news release said.
Tickets from Thursday’s game can be exchanged for a remaining regular home season game, according to the news release.
