It's always a bummer when the roofs are closed on sports stadiums. Sure, the weather may not always permit an open roof, but when it's nice outside, the fans and players deserve the fresh air and incredible views.
However, on Thursday's Opening Day for MLB, Yordan Alvarez was likely robbed of a home run thanks to the Houston Astros closed roof. In the opening inning of Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, Alvarez hit a ball high and deep to right field that ended up ricocheting off of the rafters before going foul. Replays showed that Alvarez's deep fly ball hit off a horizontal rafter and bounced off of its intended trajectory that likely would have put it over the fences in right.
Instead, the ball went foul and Alvarez then struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.
Talk about brutal. Even more baffling is why the Astros' roof isn't open considering the temperature at game time was in the mid-80s with partly sunny conditions. The humidity likely has to do with the roof being closed, but it's still such a sad reason all the same and one that likely cost Houston a run.
