HARTFORD, S.D. (KELO) — Corey Yeigh didn’t set out to be the all-time winningest driver at I-90 Speedway, but the Sioux Falls native is just three wins away from claiming the record that Craig Hanisch set in 2019.
“It’s a good feeling to finally break the record that Shawn Reed’s held for I don’t know how long and getting 40 wins. Might not be 50 yet but maybe I’ll get there.”
Hanisch’s goal when he started racing 30 years ago was to win 50 races. He tacked on three more, earning himself the title of all-time winningest driver at I-90 Speedway.
“I’ve been out here awhile, that’s what that meant,” Hanisch said. “So, Corey’s gonna figure out the same thing.”
Yeigh grew up watching Hanisch exceed that goal and now races against him in pursuit of those 53 wins.
“My uncle’s raced them for years and then they quit racing so I had to find something to do so I helped some sprint cars over the years, people my dad built engines for,” Yeigh said. “He’s known me since I was little. I’ve been watching him and helping him a little bit, if you will. We borrow parts from each other all the time, we’re friends.”
More than just surpassing a record, decades on the dirt have forged a friendship for Yeigh and Hanisch, fueled by their love for the sport, and the laughs that come with it.
“Oh yeah, we’ve been close. Real close on the race track a couple times,” Hanisch said. laughter
“I think it means everything but I mean, there’s other stuff. That’s all I’ve ever done so here we are,” Yeigh said.
Even if the goal Yeigh set out with was even simpler than winning.
“That’s the goal,” Yeigh said. “If you’re not competitive, it ain’t fun I feel.”
Yeigh has nine more chances to tie or surpass Hanisch’s record, beginning on June 27 for the Big 5-0 night.
