The New York Yankees continue to show why they are one of the deepest organizations in MLB. After losing top young outfielder Jasson Domínguez to the injured list, the Yankees didn’t panic. Instead, they simply called up another elite prospect. Spencer Jones is now with the big league club and is expected to make his MLB debut Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. And before he’s even stepped onto the field, the comparisons are already flying.

The player Jones is being compared to? None other than his own teammate: Aaron Judge. That’s obviously a massive comparison to place on any prospect, but there are real similarities between the two. Both players were first-round picks by the Yankees, are enormously tall, standing at 6’7, possess rare athleticism for their size, and have big-time raw power at the plate. Physically, the comparison is impossible to ignore.
Ironically, the similarities don’t stop with the power. Before Judge became a three-time AL MVP and one of the faces of baseball, critics constantly pointed to his strikeout rate as a major concern. Now? Jones is hearing the exact same thing.
The young slugger is striking out in more than 32% of his at-bats this season, and many evaluators wonder whether advanced MLB pitching will exploit those swing-and-miss tendencies. But Yankees fans have seen this movie before. And they know how it ended with Judge.

Despite the strikeouts, Jones has been incredibly productive in Triple-A with 11 home runs and 41 RBI in the early going. The tools are undeniable. The question has never been talent. It’s whether he can consistently make enough contact to unlock it at the highest level.
If there’s one player who understands exactly what Jones is going through, it’s Judge himself. Judge faced questions about swing-and-miss, concerns about his size, and doubts about whether his game would translate.
Now, he’s on a Hall of Fame trajectory. That makes the Yankees clubhouse the perfect environment for Jones to develop.

Prospect hype only goes so far. Now, it’s time for the real test. The Yankees are about to find out exactly what Spencer Jones can become at the Major League level.
And while expecting another Aaron Judge would be unfair, the similarities are enough to make this debut incredibly intriguing. Because if Jones even becomes close to the player he’s being compared to, the Yankees may have found another superstar.
