Austin Wells has had a brutal season thus far for the New York Yankees.

It just got worse. He has a nasty-sounding injury, and he's going on the IL.

The Yankees had just sent down J.C. Escarra, but he's coming back up to join Ali Sanchez as the two healthy Yankees catchers.

Austin Wells injury update

Wells is going on the 10-day IL with cervical headaches, the Yankees announced on Saturday.

That doesn't sound ideal, particularly for a catcher.

It's not clear immediately how long Wells will be out.

So far this season, he has hit only .166 with four home runs in 145 at bats.

Wells has been worth negative-0.2 Wins Above Replacement for the season.

He actually has only seven RBI in his 145 at bats. It's been brutally tough for Wells.

Wells was the starting catcher for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, and he's still just 26 years old. He should still be at his peak level, so this has been an odd blip.

Maybe an injury is to blame, maybe not, but the Yankees will have to figure out catching in the meantime, with the Wells injury now forcing the issue.
