The New York Yankees are generally not good in extra innings. But Friday was one of those rare games.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees tied the game before winning 3-2 in extra innings, staging a dramatic comeback against the Braves.

After Austin Riley and Matt Olson's home runs took the Braves up 2-0, Atlanta committed a major error by allowing Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr.'s infield hit to turn into a triple. Austin Wells hit an RBI double before Ben Rice came alive with a game-tying hit off the right-field wall.

Yankees trade deadline acquisition Luis Garcia Jr. made a stunning over-the-shoulder catch to rob Ronald Acuna Jr. of a potential extra-inning hit. In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Yankees were able to advance the runner in the corner on Ryan McMahon's walk-off sacrifice fly.

Yankees win to keep 0.5-game distance with Red Sox

Entering Friday, the Red Sox and the Yankees were only 0.5 games apart in the AL East standings. Earlier in the day, the Red Sox registered an emphatic 13-1 win against the Athletics to momentarily take the second spot in the division behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

However, just hours later, the Yankees reclaimed their second spot after a dramatic extra-innings win against the Braves.

The Red Sox are now 32-5 in their last 37 games. During the same stretch, the Yankees have fallen off badly, from losing the top spot to the Rays before being threatened to go further down in the divisional standings.

The Yankees will need momentum from here and with both teams scheduled to play on Saturday as well, it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox manages to finally topple the Yankees for good measure.
