Barring any injuries, the New York Yankees bench unit appears set.

Utility infielder Amed Rosario and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt are shoo-ins to crack the Opening Day roster, and Jose Caballero will start at shortstop until Anthony Volpe finishes his rehab from shoulder surgery.

For now, last season's fourth outfielder, Jasson Dominguez, seems destined to start the year at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre alongside 6-foot-7 prospect Spencer Jones. That leaves Oswaldo Cabrera's status in question.

Cabrera played just 34 games last year after fracturing his left ankle while sliding into home plate during a game last May against the Seattle Mariners. The soon-to-be 27-year-old owns a career OPS of .631, dating back to his Major League debut in 2022.

Cabrera's return to game action is 'TBD'

Since the ankle injury and surgery, Cabrera has performed light baseball activities like taking ground balls and jogging. However, his status for Opening Day is to be determined.

"Oswaldo Cabrera's status for Opening Day is "TBD" Aaron Boone said," MLB.com's Bryan Hoch wrote on X on Tuesday. "Cabrera is going through drills and appears to be moving well but has not practiced sliding."

The Yankees seem to be taking a precautionary approach to Cabrera's rehab. The jack of all trades has not made a spring training appearance and could start the regular season on the injured list if the AL East clubs' training staff deems him not ready for game action.
