I'd say the New York Yankees' season has gone relatively well. While the Yankees obviously haven't played perfect baseball for every part throughout the 2026 campaign, there's still been a lot to like. When we start factoring in some of the injuries the Yankees have dealt with on both sides of the baseball, being one of the better teams in the American League is definitely a positive sign.

Outside of a rough stretch throughout parts of May, there's even been a strong argument to be made that the Yankees have been the best team in the American League outside of the Tampa Bay Rays.

It's important to remember that the Yankees will be a much different team by the beginning of August, as the trade deadline is set for the beginning of that month.

If the Yankees continue to do what's needed at the deadline, as they have in the past few years, there's really no excuse for this not to be the best team in the American League.

However, some realities are much more unlikely than others, and Bleacher Report recently proposed one that likely won't happen. Bleacher Report suggested the Yankees could be in the mix for someone like Ketel Marte, and while it's definitely a move that would excite many Yankees fans, I just can't see it happening.

“Between José Caballero and Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Yankees have some flexible chess pieces in the infield. That may come in handy when general manager Brian Cashman tries to upgrade the infield. Let's say the Yankees were to acquire Marte to play second base. Chisholm—who is in his contract year—has shown the ability to play third base in the past. It might be hard for CJ Abrams and Anthony Volpe to co-exist, but if the Yankees acquired the former to play shortstop, Caballero would slide into more of a super-utility role, with the bulk of his time likely coming at third base. One way or another, the Yankees can't enter the postseason with Ryan McMahon—who is hitting .187 with a .559 OPS—getting regular at-bats at third base,” Tim Kelly of BR wrote.

It's very possible that the Arizona Diamondbacks could be interested in moving on from Marte for the right package, but the Yankees probably aren't going to make a blockbuster deal for an infielder right now.

The only way this would really make sense is if the Yankees know they're going to let Jazz Chisholm walk in free agency and want to have Marte long-term. It's possible that they could move on from Ryan McMahon and have an infield that features Jose Caballero, Chisholm, and Marte long term, so long as Chisholm lands an extension, but that would be a lot of money locked up in the infield.
