Yankees make odd MLB roster decision on Rookie of the Year winner Luis Gil originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are entering the 2026 season with a weaker starting rotation than normal, thanks to some of their top starters, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, being out to begin the year due to injuries.
But that's not the only reason why the Yankees' rotation is going to be weaker. They're running a four-man rotation, with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers making up the starting rotation.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, instead of using a five-man rotation, the Yankees are making an odd decision with Luis Gil, sending him down to the minor leagues to begin the regular season.
Yankees make odd Luis Gil MLB decision
With Opening Day just a day away for the Yankees, according to Nightengale, the Yankeeshave made the following decision: "Luis Gil will open (the) year in Triple A for (the) Yankees."
This is a very odd decision for the Yankees, as they will be operating with a weaker starting rotation to begin the season.
Gil struggled a bit this spring, posting a 4.66 ERA in six starts. But those struggles shouldn't have been enough to stop Gil from making the Opening Day roster.

And yet, Aaron Boone and the Yankees are not bringing the AL Rookie of the Year from 2024 up to the Majors to begin the 2026 MLB season.
After posting a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts last season and a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts in 2024, Gil is beginning the year back down in the minor leagues.
This is an odd decision from the Yankees, as the 27-year-old righty starting pitcher isn't making the Yankees' 2026 Opening Day roster despite proving he deserves a spot in the last few years.
