DETROIT — It was easy to think the worst Monday night when a 97.9-mph fastball thrown by Tigers reliever Drew Anderson banged off Yankees catcher Ali Sanchez’s right wrist.
The grimace on Sanchez’s face was telling.
“He was in a ton of pain, enough to take him out right away,” manager Aaron Boone said after a 5-3 Yankees loss at Comerica Park.
Here is the latest on Sanchez and five Yankees who are on the injured list:
ALI SANCHEZ, C
Injury: Right wrist
Status: Paternity list.
Expected return: Unknown.
2026 stats: .316 average, 6 for 19, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 7 K, .802 OPS, 10 games.
The latest: X-rays on Sanchez’s wrist were negative, but he was sent to a local hospital after Monday night’s game for a CT scan, which could reveal a hairline fracture that isn’t visible on a standard X-ray. The Yankees bought three days of time Tuesday by placing Sanchez on the paternity list with his wife going into labor. If Sanchez needs more time to recover, an IL stint can be backdated by three days.
Boone on June 22: “Hopefully we get clean on the CT and it’s just a day-to-day thing.”
MAX FRIED, LHP
Injury: Left elbow bone bruise.
Status: 15-day IL since May 16 (retroactive to May 14).
Missed games: 33.
Expected return: July.
2026 stats: 4-3 record, 3.21 ERA, 10 starts, 61.2 IP, 43 hits, 22 runs, 22 ER, 1 HR, 19 BB, 50 K.
The latest: Fried threw a bullpen on June 19 and “probably” will face hitters in a live BP next week, Boone said on Monday.
AARON JUDGE, RF
Injury: Right rib stress fracture.
Status: 10-day IL since June 5 (backdated to June 2).
Missed games: 18.
Expected return: August.
2026 stats: .248 average, 53-for-214, 17 HR, 38 RBI, 5 SB, 42 BB, 72 K, .907 OPS, 59 games.
The latest: Three weeks after his last game, Judge still is shut down from baseball activities while he waits for his fracture to heal.
Boone on June 22: “I think he’s doing some lower body stuff, but not much.”
TRENT GRISHAM, CF
Injury: Right hamstring strain.
Status: 10-day IL since June 13.
Missed games: 9.
Expected return: Late June or early July.
2026 stats: .232 average, 52-for-224, 8 HR, 35 RBI, 6 SB, 35 BB, 38 K, .747 OPS, 66 games.
The latest: Grisham is recovering faster than expected, but the Yankees want to take it slow because it’s easy to have a setback rehabbing from a hamstring strain. He did not travel with the Yankees to Detroit for this week’s series, but is scheduled to meet them in Boston for a four-game series that begins Thursday night. Next week’s agenda could include a short rehab assignment and maybe coming off the IL.
Boone on June 22: “I’m expecting him in Boston, where he’ll do full baseball activities with us up there, hopefully running bases, shagging, BP — all that stuff — with an eye to ramping things up potentially next week. We don’t want to rush the ending of that. It’s encouraging how well he’s moving, (but) we need to continue that trajectory and hopefully he’s back sooner rather than later.”
GIANCARLO STANTON, DH
Injury: Right calf strain.
Status: 15-day IL since April 28 (backdated to April 25).
Missed games: 28.
Expected return: July.
2026 stats: .256 average, 23-for-90, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 1 SB, 6 BB, 29 K, .724 OPS, 24 games.
The latest: After taking it easy for 11 days, Stanton “hopefully will get ramped up a little bit” Tuesday, Boone said on Monday. Later this week, Stanton may do his rehab work in Boston while the Yankees are there.
CLARKE SCHMIDT, RHP
Injury: Tommy John surgery on July 11, 2025.
Status: 60-day IL since Feb. 12.
Missed games: 77.
Expected return: September.
The latest: Schmidt threw a bullpen on June 17 and is scheduled to face hitters for the first time since his surgery around July 1.
