The New York Yankees are absolutely going to buy between now and the MLB trade deadline. They are in the thick of the pennant race, and assuming Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton return healthy, they could be favorites to represent the American League in the World Series.
The Yankees need another catcher, perhaps another outfield bat and help in their bullpen, and they are expected to address those issues before Aug. 3.
But could New York actually sell some of its players, as well?
One name that has surfaced as a potential trade candidate for the Yankees is reliever Camilo Doval, and Joel Sherman of The New York Post has reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates have checked on the hard-throwing right-hander.
So, why would the Yanks sell off a key piece when they are in contention?
Well, the fact of the matter is that Doval has been absolutely abysmal since arriving in the Bronx at last year's trade deadline.
Doval logged a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances for the Yankees in 2025, and through 41 outings this season, he has pitched to the tune of a 4.86 ERA. His strikeout rate (8.5 K/9) has plummeted, and there seems to be very little confidence in him turning it around.

In fact, Doval's struggles are one of the primary reasons why New York needs to seek bullpen assistance over the next week.
But could the Yankees actually get anything in return for Doval?
Perhaps the Pirates feel that the 29-year-old would pitch better in a smaller market. After all, he made an All-Star appearance with the San Francisco Giants in 2023, and prior to arriving in New York, he owned a lifetime 3.29 ERA.
Doval has always had a nasty habit of allowing inherited runners to score, but his velocity and career 10.8 K/9 has regularly made him an intriguing late-inning option.
The Dominican native led the NL with 39 saves back in 2023, and he has accumulated 109 saves since entering the big leagues in 2021.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that Doval is a failure in the Bronx, but maybe a change of scenery would do him some good.
That being said, the Yankees still probably can't expect to get anything more than a low-level prospect in return for Doval.
Of course, New York is going to be more focused on acquiring relievers rather than trading them, so we'll see if Doval even gets moved.
