It's all but guaranteed that the New York Yankees are going to go out and make the necessary moves at the Major League Baseball trade deadline to improve on both sides of the baseball. As things currently stand, the Yankees need help all over, though fixing some issues at the catcher position continues to be at the top of that priority list.
The Yankees, who have tried using multiple catchers over the years in hopes of finding an answer, just haven't been able to do so, and with the deadline approaching at the beginning of August, there's really no more time for them to keep messing around with this.
It's been well reported that New York has plenty of interest in Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers.
Jeffers, who seems to be the top option available on the trade market at the moment catching-wise, is expected to be dealt. However, because the Twins aren't playing as poorly as some would think, still hovering around for a potential berth in the American League Wild Card, and even the American League Central, it's not crazy to think that Minnesota won't want to move on from its star catcher.
However, according to the latest from CBS Sports, because they have other options, it's very possible that Jeffers could be dealt.
“The Yankees have been among the worst teams in baseball this season in getting production from the catcher position. Through 89 games, Yankees catchers have hit .172/.252/.253 with a negative WAR. With Austin Wells failing to live up to his Rookie of the Year finalist status, New York is looking at Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers -- who is on a rehab assignment while recovering from a hamate injury -- according to The Athletic. The Yankees aren't alone here, though, as the AL East-leading Rays are also reportedly involved; Nick Fortes has done most of the catching for the Rays and is hitting .259/.301/.347… Of course, the Twins are only four games out of first in the AL Central and 1 ½ games back of a wild card right now, so their position as sellers is far from clear. That said, they have both Victor Caratini and Alex Jackson, which could make Jeffers expendable even if they don't sell,” Matt Snyder of CBS Sports wrote.
I'd like to see Jeffers traded to the Yankees for many reasons, though I think the Yankees and their fan base need to be a bit cautious about expecting him to be the perfect answer.
Jeffers is a very good player in his own right, but I don't think he's some superstar who is going to come in and make some crazy big impact.
He's going to be better than what the Yankees have, and that's important, but he's not a perfect player by any means, and New York probably needs somebody better than him all around, so I'd suggest going after a catcher like Jeffers and adding another option elsewhere.
