TORONTO - As the Yankees face a burgeoning nemesis in Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage on Friday night, Toronto will also welcome back slugging catcher Alejandro Kirk.
Sidelined early in the season due to a fractured left thumb, Kirk - who played in just five games before going on the injury list - was activated before tonight’s three-game series opener.
Kirk is in Friday's lineup, batting cleanup. But the Jays also placed center fielder Daulton Varsho (left wrist) on the IL and recalled Davis Schneider.
Yesavage burst onto the big-league scene late last year and had a memorable AL Division Series Game 2 start against the Yanks, pitching into the sixth inning and striking out 11 batters in a victory here at Rogers Centre.
At Yankee Stadium on May 20, matched up against Cam Schlittler, the right-handed Yesavage (2-3, 3.16) tossed six scoreless innings (2 hits, 8 Ks) in a 2-1 Blue Jays win.
Weathers received a no-decision against Toronto on May 18 in the Bronx, yielding five runs in 5.1 innings (with homers by Ernie Clement and George Springer) in a 7-6 Yankees win.
The lefty Weathers (2-4, 3.86) struck out seven batters and walked none in that game and has received dreadful run support from the Yanks.
