Yankees' Cam Schlittler has unlocked a Mariano Rivera cheat code originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Cam Schlittler is off to a brilliant start to the 2026 MLB season.
And one reason why: He's unlocked a cheat code once discovered by New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera.
That is, of course, the cutter.
Schlittler's cutter is operating like a brand new pitch so far this season.

"Schlittler was already throwing a cutter as a rookie, and it was a pretty darn good one," MLB.com's David Adler wrote in a new article on Saturday. "But in his sophomore season, he's tweaked the grip for that cutter, and it looks like a much different pitch. Not only is Schlittler's cutter way harder than last year -- averaging over 94 mph through two starts, compared to 92 mph in 2025 -- but it's getting a ton of carry through the strike zone, a la Kenley Jansen or peak Corbin Burnes."

Schlittler has yet to allow a run this season in 11.2 innings while striking out 15.
His WHIP is a ridiculous 0.26, and he's 2-0.
Hitters aren't doing much against anything Schlittler throws, including this new cutter, which he's throwing 29.9% of the time (up from 19.7% last year.
Opponents have yet to get a hit off the cutter.
If it keeps up this kind of effectiveness when paired with the rest of Schlittler's arsenal, it'll be a big-time addition to his game.
