The Boston Red Sox are trying to fight their way back into the postseason race, but that has not stopped rumors of them being sellers at the deadline from surfacing.
The Red Sox are not out of the race, and they have players performing well. They are trying to put everything together, but that will not stop the phones from ringing about some of their talented players, including Aroldis Chapman. As rumors swirl, the Yankees' potentially adding Chapman became a hot topic.
A lot would have to happen for Chapman to join the Yankees, and it's extremely unlikely. However, Chapman noted that he would want an apology from Brian Cashman if anything like that were to happen. Chapman was with the Yankees for parts of seven seasons, but things ended on a sour note.
"What happened, happened," Chapman said on Wednesday, per Enrique Rojas. "If something like this were to happen, I believe someone from this organization should apologize first."
When asked to clarify if he was referring to Cashman, he said, "Yes."
Well, Chapman should not be holding his breath for that apology. For one, the Red Sox are unlikely to trade Chapman, let alone in the division. Second, Aaron Boone said, "No," when he was asked if he felt Chapman was owed an apology of any kind, per New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. Chapman's feud with the Yankees stems from his missing a workout before the postseason and being left off the postseason roster.
That same season, he missed time with a leg infection, and Cashman questioned whether he was "all-in" that season.
"At the end of the day, he wasn’t at the workout,” Boone said. “I made the decision based on a lot of things and thought to leave him off because I thought that was the right thing to do for our club at the time. Chappy apologized and, really, it’s water under the bridge for me. I love Chappy. I have a really good relationship with him to this day, but the ending of the 2022 season is what it was. He wasn’t there, and I made the decision that I didn’t think it was best for him to come back at that point."
Chapman made it clear that he is not worried about trade rumors and wants to help the Red Sox win. He is having another phenomenal season and was an All-Star last year. He has a vesting option for next season that kicks in with 40 innings pitched and a passed physical.
