Hours after suffering a horrific ankle injury against the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera finally had an opportunity to check his phone.
By his own admission, Cabrera struggled with negative thoughts following a potential season-ending injury. The baseball world, and all those Cabrera has met over the years, made sure the fourth-year infielder knew he had an army behind him.
In an Instagram post on Thursday evening, Cabrera said he had thousands of messages from everyone, from family and friends to agents, coaches, and teammates.
“I dropped the phone on the bed and with a big SMILE on my face, the first thing I could say was ‘God, how blessed I am,’” Cabrera wrote.
Cabrera specifically thanked Yankees captain Aaron Judge, shortstop Anthony Volpe, and head athletic training Tim Lentych, among others.

“Maybe it’s because it’s only after going through something like this that you realize the love that surrounds us,” Cabrera added.
Cabrera hit the injured list Wednesday hitting .243 with a home run, 11 RBI, and 0.5 bWAR through 34 games. The Yankees have not announced a timetable for Cabrera’s recovery, and it remained unclear as of Friday morning if he’ll undergo ankle surgery.
The Yankees are expected to play two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu, veteran infielder Oswald Peraza, and rookie Jorbit Vivas at third. Manager Aaron Boone has not specified if second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. will return to third upon returning from an oblique strain.
As for Cabrera, he made it clear he’s not letting the ankle injury derail his career or his season.
“I tell you that I will return, and I will return even stronger to continue giving my best every day,” Cabrera told his fans. “I LOVE U ALL
