In the final PGA Tour event before the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Sedgefield Country Club once again hosts the Wyndham Championship. Located in Greensboro, N.C., Sedgefield has been a regular stop on the PGA Tour schedule since 2008.

Sedgefield presents a strategic challenge that is increasingly rare on the modern PGA Tour. At just over 7,100 yards, it places a premium on precision rather than power, rewarding players who consistently position the ball in the proper sections of its contoured fairways. Although winning scores have routinely pushed well into double digits under par, the narrow tree-lined corridors, thoughtfully placed bunkers, and elevated Donald Ross green complexes demand disciplined course management and precise execution throughout the week.

Opened in 1926, Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design that has been the longtime host of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship. The course co-hosted the inaugural Greater Greensboro Open (today’s Wyndham) in 1938, won by Sam Snead. The tournament has been played at several courses over the years, and Sedgefield has hosted it since 2008. In 2007, the course underwent a $3 million restoration project aimed at transforming the layout back to Ross’ original intent. In typical Ross style, the greens are quite busy, with prominent slopes demanding the player stay below the hole. View Course
Length off the tee offers only a limited advantage at Sedgefield, and many of the tour’s longest hitters often skip the event altogether. Instead, the course consistently favors accurate drivers who excel with short and mid irons, control their wedge distances, and capitalize on Bermuda greens. That formula is reflected with many of the recent high finishers who have mainly relied on elite ball placement, sharp approach play and dependable putting rather than overwhelming power.

The Wyndham Championship annually attracts one of the most unique fields on the PGA Tour schedule. As the final event of the regular season, it blends established stars looking to build momentum before the FedEx Cup Playoffs with players desperately needing one final strong finish to extend their seasons. It currently features 16 of the top 50 players in the world rankings. The field is highlighted by defending champion Cameron Young, along with Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, Aaron Rai, Jackson Koivun, Keegan Bradley, Ryan Gerard, and a host of proven PGA Tour winners and Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup veterans.
Here are my favorite plays and fades in each price range for DraftKings contests for the 2026 Wyndham Championship.
$9,000+ range Play: Ryan Gerard, $9,300

There will be plenty of ownership on both Cameron Young and Jackson Koivun up top, and you really can’t go wrong playing either one. I’ll start a good number of my lineups with North Carolina native Ryan Gerard. While he hasn’t had much success at his two previous starts at Sedgefield, as his “Rolling Averages” chart from the Rabbit Hole shows below, he is one of the most improved players on tour when comparing his recent strokes gained average per round to what it was even 100 rounds ago. Always a great ball-striker, he might be the most improved putter in this field as he has gained strokes on the greens in seven straight starts. He has consecutive top-10 finishes, placing T-9 at The Open before finishing T-8 at the Rocket Classic.

Griffin is another North Carolina product who has finished inside the top 11 in three of his four starts at Sedgefield. Although he missed the cut by one shot in Detroit last week, his recent form remains strong with six top 20 finishes over the past few months. That stretch includes top 10s at the Travelers Championship and Charles Schwab Challenge, two shorter positional courses that reward many of the same skills required this week.
Griffin also owns one of the strongest short games in the field, which should help him navigate Sedgefield’s difficult Ross green complexes. His ball-striking has been trending up where he’s gained strokes in six of his last eight events.

Fade: Maverick McNealy, $9,000
After a solid start to the season, McNealy’s form has declined. He missed the cut at the Open Championship and has failed to finish inside the top 30 in each of his last four starts. The primary concern is his ball-striking, as he has lost strokes in that category in eight of his last 11 events.
His limited history at Sedgefield offers little encouragement, with a T-45 and a missed cut in two appearances. McNealy remains capable of making the cut, but he has yet to record a top 10 this season. At this salary, his recent performance does not provide enough upside.

Thompson remains one of the most volatile players on tour, but Donald Ross courses have consistently produced some of his best results. According to the Rabbit Hole, he has gained 2.02 strokes per round on Ross designs over the past three years, the second-best rate in this field. His results at Sedgefield have also improved in three consecutive appearances, progressing from T-22 to T-12 and then T-11 last season.
That course fit is supported by his current form. Thompson finished T-8 at the restored Donald Ross designed Detroit Golf Club last week after placing runner up there in 2024, and he entered Detroit following a T-7 at the 3M Open. Over his past 16 rounds, he ranks fifth on the entire tour in ball-striking while gaining 1.53 strokes per round.

Fade: Michael Brennan, $8,600
Brennan held the lead during Sunday’s final round at the Rocket Classic before collapsing down the stretch. Detroit Golf Club was a much better fit for his aggressive style than Sedgefield, where the numerous doglegs and frequent use of less than driver reduce his advantage off the tee.
$7,000+ range Play: Sungjae Im, $7,700

Newsflash: For the first time in 16 starts, Sungjae Im gained strokes on approach at last week’s Rocket Classic. He finished T-15 while gaining in all four categories, giving him two top-15 finishes in his last three starts.
Sedgefield has always been one of Im’s best courses. He has made the cut in all seven appearances, finished T-27 or better six times and recorded four top 10s since 2019, including a runner up finish in 2022. He has gained the third most total strokes here since 2016, including gaining 0.38 strokes per round on approach across 28 career rounds. With his iron play finally showing improvement, this is an ideal venue for that progress to continue.
$6,000+ range Play: Matt McCarty, $6,900

This is a pure upside play. McCarty has struggled recently, but he has already shown an ability to reverse his form quickly. Earlier this season, he followed consecutive missed cuts with four straight top-25 finishes, including the Masters and three Signature Events.
McCarty made the cut at last week’s Rocket Classic and gained more than three strokes on approach. His lack of distance is usually responsible for most of his losses off the tee, but that weakness should be minimized at Sedgefield. He finished T-8 in his Wyndham Championship debut last season, and another strong approach/putting week could put him in contention again.
