Feb. 14—Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball has won a District 2 championship every year since 2015. That trend is likely continue as the tournaments begin this week.
Hazleton Area will defend its Class 6A crown as the only team in the bracket with a winning record. Crestwood and Dallas are the top-two seeds in 5A.
Nanticoke Area is third seeded in 4A. Holy Redeemer and Lake-Lehman check in as the second and third seeds, respectively, in Class 3A. Wyoming Seminary is atop the 2A field.
So somebody should leave Mohegan Arena between Feb. 26-28 with a championship.
There was still a game in the Lackawanna League being played Saturday, so playoffs brackets weren't available. However, the game should have no effect on the district seedings.
Tickets for all rounds through the semifinals are $6 and available at piaad2.org through the Hometown Ticketing link. There is a pesky processing fee added to each ticket.
Fans over 65 and under 5 are admitted free with proof of age. PIAA Gold passes will be honored. Tickets for the championship games are $8 and available at the Mohegan Arena box office or on Ticket Master.
Seedings were based on a power rankings formula which included only regular-season games. Team records include any postseason games played.
CLASS 6A
(two teams to states)
Seedings: 1. Hazleton Area (22-2); 2. Scranton (10-12); 3. Delaware Valley (11-11); 4. Wilkes-Barre Area (6-16); 5. Wyoming Valley West (2-20); 6. West Scranton (3-19)
Defending Champion: Hazleton Area
Outlook: Hazleton Area has won the last two District 2 championships and five of the nine in Class 6A. There is absolutely no doubt the Cougars are massively favored to win another.
Hazleton Area defeated second-seeded Scranton 64-35 on Dec. 9.
The two other WVC teams — Wyoming Valley West and Wilkes-Barre Area — will meet in the quarterfinals. WBA won the regular-season games 52-40 and 44-28.
After opening 5-0, Delaware has won just twice in its last 11 games.
CLASS 5A
(two teams to states)
Seedings: 1. Crestwood (21-3); 2. Dallas (19-3); 3. North Pocono (18-4); 4. Abington Heights (14-8); 5. Pittston Area (13-9); 6. Berwick (8-14); 7. Wallenpaupack (8-14)
Defending Champion: Crestwood
Outlook: Crestwood won a district championship for the first time in 2025, but the title comes with a caveat. No teams has won consecutive Class 5A championships since Abington Heights in 2021 and 2022.
Plus, Dallas handed Crestwood one of its losses, 47-38 on Jan. 14.
North Pocono has a pair of double-digit wins over Abington Heights, a team which won five of six championships from 2017-2022.
Pittston Area plays strong defense, but doesn't have the offensive firepower as in recent seasons. Berwick is very young and will be hard pressed to get out of the quarterfinals.
CLASS 4A
(two teams to states)
Seedings: 1. Scranton Prep (17-5); 2. Valley View (17-5); 3. Nanticoke Area (17-6); 4. Honesdale (16-6); 5. Wyoming Area (8-14); 6. Tunkhannock (7-15); 7. Mid Valley (5-17); 8. Hanover Area (6-16)
Defending Champion: Scranton Prep
Outlook: Scranton Prep has won the last three Class 3A championships and seven out of the last eight. The Classics are on an 11-game winning streak with all but one victory by double digits.
Valley View hasn't won a district title since 2001 and Honesdale's last championship came in 1992.
Nanticoke Area is the only WVC team with a realistic chance of getting to the arena, but had a couple key injuries in the WVC Tournament semifinal game. The Trojanettes wore the crown in 2017.
The field, obviously, is top heavy so the other four teams look like one-and-dones.
CLASS 3A
(two teams to states)
Seedings: 1. Dunmore (19-3); 2. Holy Redeemer (16-7); 3. Lake-Lehman (15-7); 4. Riverside (13-9); 5. Montrose (14-8); 6. Western Wayne (11-11); 7. Lakeland (7-15); 8. Carbondale Area (2-20)
Defending Champion: Dunmore
Outlook: Dunmore is heavily favored to get back to title game. The Bucks have routed most of their opponents and two losses have been by a point.
Holy Redeemer and Lake-Lehman also have good chances of playing for the title. The teams split their two games, with Redeemer winning 52-40 on Dec. 22 and Lehman prevailing 61-51 on Jan. 22.
Riverside has been solid on defense, but struggles on the offense end. The Vikings lost 23-19 to Redeemer to start their season.
Montrose has recovered from an 0-4 start which included a 59-35 loss to Lehman.
CLASS 2A
(two teams to states)
Seedings: 1. Wyoming Seminary (15-6); 2. Mountain View (16-6); 3. Elk Lake (14-8); 4. Holy Cross (12-10); 5. Blue Ridge (10-12); 6. Forest City (9-13); 7. Old Forge (7-15); 8. Lackawanna Trail (3-19)
Defending Champion: Mountain View
Outlook: Wyoming Seminary is the top seed, but the Blue Knights might not be the favorites.
Defending champion Mountain View also won championships at Class A in 2023 and 2024 and have 2,000-point scorer Addison Kilmer.
Still, Seminary has a chance at its first-ever district title. The Blue Knights have defeated D2-3A second seed Holy Redeemer and D2-3A third seed Lake-Lehman. They lost to Mountain View in overtime in last year's semifinals.
Elk Lake has lost to Mountain View by six points twice. Holy Cross won three D2-2A championships from 2021-2024, but doesn't appear as strong as in the past.
CLASS A
The two District 2 teams — Susquehanna (4-18) and MMI Prep (0-22) — are in a subregional with District 11.
While Susquehanna defeated MMI Prep for the District 2 title game at the arena last year, District 2 decided no game will be played this season. Susquehanna, though, qualified for the subregional.
