Nov. 12—Washington State fired athletic director Anne McCoy after 18 months on the job, the school announced Wednesday.

McCoy served as interim AD in the wake of former AD Pat Chun's decision to take the same position at University of Washington, starting in March 2024, and the school hired her as its full-time athletics steward in June 2024.

Jon Haarlow, WSU's assistant VP and chief operating officer, will serve as interim AD, according to the press release.

WSU will conduct a national search for its next athletic director.

The Seattle Times' Percy Allen first reported that McCoy was "out" as AD.

"Anne has provided steady leadership through one of the most complex and pivotal periods in the history of Cougar Athletics," said WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell in a statement. "She built a strong foundation for the program's future grounded in integrity, academic success, and care for our student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for Anne's decades of service and her unwavering commitment to Washington State University."

McCoy hired football coach Jimmy Rogers, men's basketball coach David Riley, swimming coach Russ Whitaker, women's golf coach Kevin Tucker and retained women's basketball coach Kamie Ethridge through a contract extension.

The longtime Pullman resident had worked for WSU athletics in various capacities since 2001 and in 2024 became WSU's 15th athletic director and the first woman to serve in the role.

McCoy led WSU through the reformation of the Pac-12 Conference and recent budget cuts, which saw WSU cut field events and scale back sprints in its track and field program.

WSU hired President Cantwell earlier this year and will begin competing in the new Pac-12 in fall 2026, alongside conference holdover Oregon State and new additions including Boise State, San Diego State and Gonzaga.

Now, WSU will enter that new era with a new athletic director.
