The Women’s Pro Baseball League will host its first-ever doubleheader today. The Boston Hunters will take on the New York Heights in Game 1 and the Los Angeles Queens will face the San Francisco Firebells in the nightcap.

As Hall of Famer Ernie Banks said, “It’s a great day for a ball game; let’s play two!”

Game 1​


Up first will be the East Coast faceoff, which will feature the first time New York (1-1) and Boston (0-2) have taken the field against each other. This is the first of three straight meetings between the two teams. They play today, Sunday and Thursday.

The Heights earned their first win on Thursday night with a 13-8 victory over San Francisco, but dropped their debut game 10-8 to L.A. Boston lost 11-3 to San Francisco in their inaugural game and last played on Wednesday when it lost 12-4 to the Queens. New York is led by catcher Denae Bentis, who is the first WPBL player to hit two homers. She has posted a hit in eight of her first nine at-bats with seven RBIs and also has three stolen bases. Center fielder Molly Paddison leads the Hunters with two hits, including a double in 3 at-bats with a walk as well.

Game 2​


This evening, the West Coast showdown will take the field at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Ill. The two teams battled on Friday night with the Queens (3-0) remaining undefeated with a 12-3 victory over the Firebells (1-2).

L.A.’s lineup is filled with hot hitters and baserunners like Ashton Lansdell, Thaima Maximiliana, Michelle Roche and Maggie Fox, who have combined for 18 hits, including five doubles and two homers, and six stolen bases in three games. The Firebells, whose lone win came in the form of an 11-3 victory over Boston, are led by Amanda Gianelloni and Alexia Jorge. Both have five hits on the season, combining for one double, one homer and three stolen bases.
