In this edition of SB Nation Reacts, we’re asking if you’d approve of Michigan football adding corporate jersey patches. Vote below.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the athletic departmenr is “exploring new revenue assets that are highly visible but thoughtfully integrated” including jersey patches, onfield and on-court logos and in-game sponsorships and scoreboard advertising.
“We remain fiercely committed to upholding Michigan’s core values. We will preserve the look, feel, and soul of the Michigan Stadium experience that makes Saturdays in Ann Arbor so special,” Manuel said.
Jersey patches are the way of the future and have been utilized in soccer for years and are now commonplace in the NBA, MLB, NHL and other sports leagues. Corporate patches in college sports are becoming more common as well, with Wisconsin getting in on the action on Tuesday, announcing Culver’s is their jersey sponsor.
Culver’s is a Wisconsin-based chain that serves arguably the best burger of any fast-food or fast-casual chain and makes a lot of sense as a sponsor. If Michigan were to have a patch, which they likely will soon, it’ll have to provide a similar comfort.
