Just wondering peoples views about Grace being a manager. I think he would be a great manager and would love to see him manage the diamondbacks.

At least he'll reward the team with a couple of kegs after every win!! That might motivate them

The opinions so far aren't taking the prospect of Mark Grace as Manager very seriously.

Gracie is a flake! You don't put a flake in charge of forty other people and expect consistency or success.

Especially a young offense like the D'backs.

Hell, why don't we name Eric Byrnes player-manager?

Pardon me. I think I'm going to :barf: .

He has no experience whatsoever, I think it would be a mistake to name him manager. If he wants to go toil as an A Ball manager somewhere and earn it, then fine, but right now, leave him in the booth.

he has no experience but a lot of knowledge of the game and you can see that from listening to the broadcast.

So does anyone who's played at the highest level for as long as he did, does that make them good managers?

My view is that people who suggest Grace be manager don't have a very good knowledge of the game.

Grace didn't even know what the relevance of OBP was two years ago. He is a lousy commentator because he doesn't grasp or properly weigh a lot of subtleties. He might make a good hitting coach, but that's all. He's never managed in the minors, and he doesn't have the personality to run anything skillfully.

I assume they've been grooming Matt Williams, actually, although with his financial stake in the team, that may not work well. Not saying he'd be my choice, but he'd be better than a lot of names being kicked around.

He would give the team an identity which they badly need right now, but at the same time his inexperience and inability to keep his opinion to himself would probably put the team around the same place they are now. He'd be another Ozzie Guillen, which means either really good or really bad.

Maybe Mark Grace would be a good manager. I dislike him as a commentator.

Some people have a natural ability to be good managers or head coaches in their particular sports and don't need to apprentice first. Good apprentices seem to fail just as often as managers or head coaches as the unapprenticed ones.

I'm not going to pass judgment on Grace's managerial ability absent any evidence.

I chewed on that one for a while. It might have legs.

No he would be terrible. I met him in Chicago during the players strike and he basically could give a crap. Said he had his money and was not worried about the strike being settled. First bump in the road if he was manager the same attitude would kick in.

Chip Hale would be my pick.

I am not sure he would achieve what Ozzie has, Ozzie had coaching experience. Okay, maybe Gracie could do it, but Ozzie did have coaching experience.
