Detroit — World Cup fever is back in downtown Detroit as soccer fans have gathered at Campus Martius Park to watch the U.S. take on Belgium in the Round of 16.

Michelle Guarisco of Wyandotte and several of her friends made the trip downtown on Monday to cheer on the U.S.

"We're huge, huge sports fans and I just started getting into soccer this year with the World Cup," she said. "In a time when the world is in so much turmoil, this is bringing the world together, and it's beautiful. I love it."

She was joined by her friends Virginia Patrick and Heidi Miller, a married couple from Oakland Township, who have watched high-level women's soccer matches in places like Vancouver and London. They came to Campus Martius in search of other passionate fans.

"We were looking for some other people who want to cheer them on," Patrick said. "In our local area they're not as peppy as they are down here."

Father and son Orlando and Devan Rodriguez donned matching red, white and blue jerseys in support of the Americans. They were cautiously optimistic about the team's chances.

"Hopefully we win," said Devan of Detroit.

"It's gonna be a tough one, but they should be able to pull it out," added his father from Taylor.

The winner of today's match will play Spain in the quarterfinals. The loser concludes its World Cup run.
