INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 28: Richie Laryea #22 and Stephen Eustaquio #7 of Canada celebrate after scoring a goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 32 match between South Africa and Canada at Los Angeles Stadium on June 28, 2026 in Inglewood, United States. Well, it wasn’t exactly champagne football, but Canada did it. In what was (weirdly!) the only Round of 32 World Cup match to take place yesterday, the tournament co-hosts scored in extra time to win 1-0 over South Africa in Los Angeles and book a ticket to the Round of 16. It was the first victory in the knock-out stage in Canadian football history, and the first time Canada has made a World Cup Round of 16. South Africa are not a very good team, but they gave a decent showing in LA. Canada will now face the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco.

Here’s your daily recap and upcoming matches for today.

Day 18 Recap

South Africa 0-1 Canada

Goals: Eustaquio (90+2′)

The football wasn’t great, but the match was compelling. South Africa were one of the worst teams to actually qualify for the R32 but gave Canada everything they could handle despite the Canadians being obviously and dramatically the better team over 90 minute. Finally, ball went goal, but not until injury time of the second half. Congratulations to Canada!
