The United States still has a group stage game remaining in the World Cup, but the Americans can fully begin preparing for the knockout stages.

The USMNT has known its when (July 1) and where (Levi’s Stadium) it was going to play its round of 32 game since it beat Australia last week. The only mystery remaining was who they’d play.

Bosnia and Herzegovina all but solved that puzzle by beating Qatar, 3-1, on Wednesday. According to the Athletic’s bracket simulator, the likelihood that the U.S. will play Bosnia and Herzegovina is higher than 99 percent. The only way the United States could play somebody else now is if Bosnia and Herzegovina isn’t one of the third place teams to advance.

According to the Athletic’s Henry Bushnell.

“There is one (1) scenario out of 330 where the third-place qualifier from Group B goes to a different part of the bracket. This would require the third-place finishers in Groups A, C, D and F to be the four third-place teams who don’t advance.”

Bosnia and Herzegovina opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw vs. Canada before losing to Switzerland 4-1. Its game against Qatar was a de facto play-in game for the right to play the Americans next week.

Before the start of the World Cup, FIFA listed 495 combinations for round of 32 matchups. Based on how the group stage has played out thus far, Bosnia and Herzegovina would almost certainly be the Americans’ opponent.

The Americans face Türkíye on Thursday at 10 p.m. to close out the group stage at SoFi Stadium.
