While the Houston Texans showed growth throughout the roster, the run game lacked juice.
Rookie running back Woody Marks led the Texans in rushing yards last season with only 703 yards and three touchdowns. A fourth-round pick, Marks was expected to be the secondary option in the rushing attack behind former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb, but instead was forced into a larger role after production stalled early in the season.
Houston needed an upgrade for the offense, so it dialed up Detroit and traded for David Montgomery. While it's been a while, Montgomery, 29, has a history of being a full-time starter, first with the Chicago Bears and then in spurts with the Lions opposite of All-Pro Jahmyr Gibbs.
Throughout his career, Montgomery has consistently produced in the backfield and gotten into the end zone. In fact, among active players, he has the tenth-most rushing touchdowns.
For Marks, having a veteran like Montgomery on the roster will help his development as well as the whole running back room.
“It’s been lovely,” Marks said. “Just being around him and being around all the guys in the room, we have a real great connection in our room. We hang out all the time. We lift together. We get in the cold tub together, hot tub together. We’re really tight in that room.”
Another person who will benefit from Montgomery’s presence in Houston is Jawhar Jordan. Jordan is going into his third year in the league after having played limited snaps last season.
The young running back is already improving in training camp and could be used more in the offseason this season, even with Montgomery now on the roster.
