The Houston Texans surprised the NFL a bit when they signed free agent running back David Montgomery.
Now, they have a very strong backfield depth chart when Monty combines with Woody Marks.
The question remained, though: How are they going to be used?
Turns out, it's sounding like a committee.
NFL Network's Jane Slater reported on Wednesday that Marks and Montgomery are going to split reps as RB1.

That seems likely to continue as a plan throughout the regular season, because that's how the modern NFL works. It was always unlikely that one of these guys just totally overtook the backfield by himself.
Marks is coming off a promising rookie season after being a 2025 first-round pick. He had 703 rushing yards and has been a playmaker as a pass catcher dating back to his days in college.
Montgomery is the veteran, coming aboard from the Detroit Lions after splitting time there with Jahmyr Gibbs over the last few seasons.
For the Texans, it makes a lot of sense.

In fantasy football? Running back committees make everything tougher.
Marks will likely be viewed as the player with more upside, and the guy to snag in PPR formats, but Montgomery seems more like the guy who will be scoring the touchdowns at the end of drives.
Both will be draftable, but it'll be tough to rely on either in the early going as an RB2.
If one were to get hurt, that would likely boost the other's value, although the Texans could also dip further down the depth chart to keep the committee approach going in the interests of keeping everyone healthy.
This will definitely be a battle to watch during the preseason, but if it ends up as a 50-50 split, that's tough to trust overall production from either individual back.
