The Wisconsin women’s basketball team dropped its third Big Ten road game of the season by at least 20 points on Jan. 29.

But the Badgers’ 81-58 loss to No. 11 Ohio State at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, had a different feel to it.

Unlike UW’s lopsided losses at Maryland, Michigan and Minnesota, the Badgers didn’t play themselves out of contention with a poor start. They also contained one of the Big Ten’s leading scorers, at least for a while.

But there was no stopping Buckeyes sophomore Jaloni Cambridge in the second half. The 5-foot-7 guard scored 21 of her 29 points during the final 20 minutes when Ohio State outscored UW, 52-30. The bulk of that advantage came during the final 13 ½ minutes when Wisconsin was outscored by 23 points to turn a hard-fought contest into an apparant blowout.

Senior guard Destiny Howell finished with 29 points on 11-for-16 shooting for Wisconsin. Senior point guard Ronnie Porter, who didn't get a breather until she left the game with 6 minutes to play, totalled eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Gift Uchenna grabbed 12 rebounds.

Wisconsin (13-9, 5-6 Big Ten) returns to action Feb. 4 vs. Indiana at the Kohl Center in Madison. Ohio State raised its record to 19-3 overall and 8-2 in the Big Ten.

Here are three takeaways from the loss.

The 3-pointer was an early equalizer for UW

The Badgers committed seven turnovers in the first and second quarters but only trailed, 29-28, at the half.

Ohio State’s inability to cash in on those chances helped UW. The Buckeyes had just seven points off turnovers at the break.

Equally important was UW’s 3-point shooting. Wisconsin was 6 for 10 during that portion of the game. Howell hit all three of her attempts and five of six shots overall. The Badgers also got one 3 each from Porter, junior Kyrah Daniels and senior Lily Krahn.

Few points in the paint, free throw attempts spell trouble for UW

Wisconsin’s struggles to get points in the paint and at the free throw line continued.

The Badgers were outscored, 42-12, in the paint. They went 3 for 7 from the free throw line, equaling their fewest attempts of the season.

Wisconsin’s inability to get easy points was especially noticable during the final 3 ½ minutes of the third quarter when Cambridge knifed through the UW defense for layups and high-percentage shots and went on a personal 8-0 run that gave Ohio State, a 50-42 edge with 1 minute 54 seconds to go in the quarter.

The run gave the Buckeyes their first separation from UW of the night.

Foul trouble hurt Wisconsin’s effort

Wisconsin entered play short-handed as junior Breauna Ware and freshman center Dorja Zaja were listed as out on the availability report and watched the game from the bench.

Losing Daniels for about 14 minutes in the second and third quarter hurt. She picked up her third foul on a charge call with 5 ½ minutes to go in the first half and didn’t return until the start of the third quarter. Cambridge drew and Daniels’ fourth foul less than 90 seconds into the third quarter, sending her to bench again.

By the time Daniels returned to start the fourth quarter Wisconsin was down by 11 and the momentum had shifted to Ohio State.

Not only is Daniels the Badgers’ second-leading scorer, she is one of their top ball-handers and decision makers. She was missed.
