Wisconsin closed the gap against Illinois, but not enough to change the bottom line.

The Badgers women’s basketball team lost to the Illini, 82-70, in a first-round game of the Big Ten tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Wednesday, March 4.

The loss was the 10th straight for Wisconsin, which dropped to 13-17 overall.

The outcome was the second loss for the Badgers during that run to Illinois, which defeated them, 92-60, on Feb. 11 in Champaign, Ill.

UW trailed by as many as 41 points in that game. Wednesday it trailed by as many as 16 points.

The Badgers, down 39-23, in the second quarter closed the first half with a 10-2 run that made it an eight-point game. Wisconsin then opened the second half with a 9-2 run that cut the Illini advantage to 43-42 with 7 minutes 12 second to play.

Illinois, however, never relinquished the lead and closed the quarter with a 14-3 run that gave it a 62-48 advantage late in the third quarter.

Wisconsin didn’t get the deficit down to single digits.

Senior forward Gift Uchenna tied her season high with 24 points and five rebounds for Wisconsin. She hit 10 of 16 shots for the Badgers, who shot 44.8% overall and 38.1% (8 for 21) from 3-point range.

Junior guard Kyrah Daniels added 18 points and junior guard Laci Steele finished with 12 points and hit four of six from 3-point range.

Berry Wallace led Illinois with 22 points and freshman guard Destiny Jackson added 21 points, six rebounds and five assists. The Illini also held a 37-29 edge on the boards that included 15 offensive rebounds that led to 14 points and scored 24 points off Wisconsin’s 19 turnovers.
