MADISON – While the rest of the Big Ten Conference resumed league play this week, the Wisconsin men's hockey team hosted its final non-conference series of the season.

It was a good thing because the Badgers needed to shake fight through a slow start.

UW failed to cash in on countless opportunities during the first two periods but found its shooting touch during the final period to put away Alaska Anchorage, 5-0, at the Kohl Center on Friday Jan. 9.

The contest was Wisconsin’s first at home since Nov. 15 and just their third since wrapping up the first half of Big Ten play Dec. 6.

Senior Ben Dexheimer scored the only goal UW needed off a power play at the 16-minute 24-second mark of the second period.

UW added four more scores during the final 12 minutes, three in even-play situations.

Freshman Oliver Tulk finished with two points (one goal, one assist). The Badgers also got goals from sophomore Ryan Botterill and freshmen Bruno Idzan and Luke Osburn.

Sophomore Gavin Morrissey tied for the team high with the two points on two assists. Twelve players scored a point.

Before the barrage of scoring UW dominated the scoring opportunities thanks to a 21-3 shots on goal advantage during the first period. The Badgers (14-3-2) finished the night with a 48-16 edge in shots.

On the other end of the ice freshman David Hauser scored his third shutout of the season.

The teams meet in the second game of series at 5 p.m. Saturday Jan. 10.
