Wisconsin football legend Jim Leonhard is interviewing for the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator vacancy on Saturday, according to multiple reports.
Leonhard is one of the first three candidates to interview for the position, along with Minnesota Vikings' defensive backs coach Daronte Jones and Cleveland Browns' safeties coach Ephraim Banda.
Leonhard is currently wrapping up his second season as one of the Denver Broncos' top defensive assistants. He joined the franchise in 2024 as its defensive backs coach, then was promoted to assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator in 2025. The former Badger manages a Broncos secondary that finished the regular season ranked seventh in the NFL in pass defense (187.2 yards allowed per game). That unit is part of an overall defense that was the league's second-best throughout the year, allowing just 278.2 total yards per game.
The Broncos enter the 2025 playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They will host a Divisional Round game next weekend, with the opponent still to be determined.
Leonhard's rise through the NFL ranks is no surprise; the former All-American safety was arguably the top defensive coordinator in college football during his time leading the Badger defense. While an eventual return to the college ranks isn't out of the question, an NFL defensive coordinator position appears to be Leonhard's next move.
