The Dallas Wings are close to making a move to a bigger arena.
Wings head coach Jose Fernandez revealed on Tuesday that the franchise will play all of their games next season at the American Airlines Center, where the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars play. That would be a major step up from the College Park Center, the shared arena they currently play at on the campus of UT-Arlington.
But Fernandez, apparently, jumped the gun on the announcement. The Wings are only in “advanced negotiations” with the American Airlines Center.
While nothing is official just yet, it sounds like a move for the team is right around the corner.
The Wings relocated to Dallas from Tulsa ahead of the 2016 season. They currently share the College Park Center with UT-Arlington. That venue seats up to 7,000 fans. The American Airlines Center has a capacity of about 20,000 for Mavericks games.
The Wings played a pair of games at the American Airlines Center last season, too, both of which were sold out. Their game against the Indiana Fever last June set a Texas WNBA record with 20,409 fans.
The arena shift would be the second major improvement for the Wings in recent years. The team is also building an $81 million practice facility that is set to open ahead of the 2027 campaign.
The Wings went just 10-34 last season after they selected former UConn star Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. The team then hired Fernandez to replace Chris Koclanes, and the team used the No. 1 overall pick on fellow UConn star Azzi Fudd. They will open the regular season against the Fever on Saturday in Indianapolis.
While it’s unclear what will happen for the Wings if the Mavericks opt to leave the American Airlines Center at the end of their lease in 2031, the jump for the time being would be a major step for the Wings as they continue to expand in north Texas.
