Will you be upset if Cards think outside the box?

We all have our draft publications. We visited numerous websites. We have all seen countless numbers of "Top 100" list, all of which can be quite different. We all have our opinions of just who we think or would like to select and we all know there is a 50-50 chance of our team making the right decision.

So it's our turn to pick. Some of the names that have been mentioned are still there. Perhaps Mendenhall, Stewart, and DCR. The Commissioner steps up to the podium and says,
"With the 16th pick in the 2008 draft the Arizona Cardinals select.....

Calais Campbell or,
Phillip Merling or,
Quinten Groves or,
Felix Jones"

Are you going to be upset? Do we have to take the highest rated player left on the board for you to be happy or do you trust that this current staff and FO can pick a player that best fits our system even if he is rated 5 or 6 or even 8 players lower?

I remember the Bills selecting Donte Whitner and getting blasted because all the experts claiming they took him way to soon. That selection seems to have turned out alright.

So, would you be upset?

Groves - Acceptable.
Merling - No.

I don't pretend to know more about these players than the team, and I've seen that George Boone's fingerprints have been wiped from the organization.

I'm welcoming whoever we select.

That said, I hope it's not too big of a curveball because I think a lot of journalists are waiting to pounce on the Cards for any perceived misstep.

I can gurantee if we go anything but CB in the first round ESPN is going to be all over us. But I don't really care.

Personally I am happy we won't have to pay a top 10 price for a first round pick and I would like the top DB, DE or RB available, but not necessarily in that order.

I'd be disappointed with Campbell at 16....way, way, way too early for him, and he disappeared big time last year

work ethic issues and got lazy after his 06 huge second half

Merling, a bit disappointed, but less so than Calais

if the comparisons to Bryant Westbrook are accurate, then not really on Jones....a bit weary, but not disappointed

Groves, not really either though a bit too high

and its funny, because it turned out that Whitner has made a larger impact than Huff

The last time the Cardinals "thought out of the box" was when they passed on Suggs (who's gone to Pro Bowls) and traded too far down to grab Brian Johnson (gone) and Calvin Pace (gone).

Drafting Merling at #16 would be a reach according to conventional wisdom, but I could see the Cardinal scouting dept. falling in love with the guy.

Conceivably Felix Jones too (uhhh...nah!)

The other 2 guys (maybe F Jones too), I'd be throwing my bowl of Granola across the room.

I dunno. I was pretty ticked 3 years into their career, but I've mellowed as they got better. We'll see if they continue to grow.

That said, I'd rather not be pissed for a number of years again.

Point is I EXPECT us to get a good--possibly GREAT--player at #16 who will make us better, whether it be in the short term or the long run. I think the 2nd pick is MORE critical than the 1st. It's either icing on the cake or re-bounding from getting shafted in the 1st.

I think Merling would be OK, but I would rather have Derrick Harvey, if we go for a DE. But before Harvey, I'd rather take Keith Rivers (if he's still on the board) or Johnathan Stewart. If those three aren't there, then I like: DRC, then Mendenhall. I'm not a Jenkins fan, despite his speed. Also, I do not see why so many like Cason in either the first or 2nd rounds. JMO though.

Aside from the war, the draft may be the most analyzed activity in this country. The problem is that teams that try to beat the box under those circumstances (usually ego motivated), almost always lose. There are far more instances of failure than success.

I don't want them to get "cute" in the first three rounds. If the top rb/cbs are gone and they have a shot at the top couple of OT's or LB's it won't be the end of the world...but stay grounded and don't be cute...as Jeff said missing out on Suggs was "overthinking" and really being stupid.

You speak for me. One caveat though, no trade up or down in rounds 1 and 2. Stay put. Make the picks.

ESPN seemed to think a RB was our biggest need as did I. With Mendhall there I must admit I wanted him but when we took Cromartie I was not surprised. We have an affinity for DB's. How many have we taken in the past 10 years and how many are still here?
