CHICAGO – Will Warren had approached Friday’s start at Wrigley Field with a bit more bravado.
Whatever was happening in his previous nine outings – including one relief appearance – wasn’t working, evidenced by a 6.45 ERA since June 8.
“Got back to who I am, throwing nasty stuff up there, honestly,’’ said the Yankees’ right-hander after a 2-0 afternoon win against the Cubs.
Yeah, the Yanks’ creaky lineup featured one stalled rally and two solo homers against Cubs’ lefty ***** Imanaga.
But one of those shots was delivered by Spencer Jones, his fourth home run of the year and the slugging rookie’s first homer against a left-handed pitcher.
“Awesome to get a pitch to handle and obviously the result was cool,’’ said Jones, who thoroughly enjoyed his first experience playing at the Friendly Confines.
As Warren and Jones helped distance the Yankees from their two painful extra-inning South Side losses against the White Sox, there was another element at play.
Rushing toward MLB’s Monday trade deadline, the Yankees’ search for a swing-and-miss bullpen arm, a righty-hitting catcher and perhaps another hitter or two, will come at a cost.
Warren and Jones could be part of that trade inventory, and their stock rose a little higher on Friday afternoon.
“Feel like at the end of the day, you control what you can control,’’ said Warren, who claimed his first win since May 31, the last time Aaron Judge (rib fracture) was in the Yanks’ lineup.
By 6 p.m. on Monday, “whatever’s going to happen is going to happen,’’ said Warren. “So, that’s never really been on my mind.
“Ever since I’ve been with the Yankees, that’s kind of been a thing. So, I’m kind of used to it by now.’’
The 6-foot-7 Jones has lived it, too.
How does Jones’ unique power-speed combo – accompanied by a high strikeout rate – project for interested teams, and do the Yankees see him as part of their future?
On the Yanks’ current roster, switch-hitting outfielder Jasson Dominguez and lefty Ryan Weathers – coming off a sharp, seven scoreless innings Thursday – are in the Warren-Jones bin as potential trade chips.
And their minor league pool of prospects is heavy on pitching depth, some of which is bound to be moved to bolster the Yanks’ pennant chances.
MLB scouts tailing Warren on Friday saw a pitcher who spotted his fastball and used his secondary arsenal – especially his changeup – to greater advantage.
“Just trusting my stuff in the zone, getting ahead,’’ said Warren, who tossed 6.2 scoreless and was helped from a seventh inning jam by Paul Blackburn.
As a result, Warren “had fun today for the first time in a long time’’ during his 88-pitch effort.
"He's got a lot of different ways to beat you, both righty and lefty,'' said Yanks manager Aaron Boone, after Warren struck out seven Cubs without walking a batter.
After six innings, Warren had thrown just 68 pitches, his exact total during last Sunday’s rough, three-inning, six-run start at Philadelphia.
“Just trusting my stuff in the zone, getting ahead,’’ said Warren. “We attacked the zone early, forcing them to make swings.’’
Before Friday, Warren had been trending as the Yankee starter most likely to transition to the bullpen when Carlos Rodon (elbow inflammation) returns to the rotation (he's yet to begin a rehab assignment).
That's assuming the Yanks have a healthy five, led by Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.
Weathers and Warren reside in that gray area, and at some point, the math might get more complicated with Clarke Schmidt (Tommy John surgery rehab) trending toward a September return, as either a starter or reliever.
That's a luxury for any club. And a source of trade depth for a Yankee team with a win-now mandate, as Monday's deadline closes in.
