Will Wade buyout, contract details as NC State Wolfpack coach originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Will Wade arrived at NC State in last year with a long-term commitment and a contract structure designed to bring the program back while rewarding success.
The former McNeese coach signed a six-year deal worth more than $17 million to become the Wolfpack’s head coach. The contract begins with a base salary of $2.5 million for the 2025-26 season and includes annual raises of $150,000, increasing his pay to approximately $3.25 million by the final year of the agreement in the 2030-31 season.
Wade’s contract also contains significant performance incentives. He can earn up to $1.7 million in bonuses annually, including $100,000 for winning the ACC Tournament and as much as $1 million for capturing the national championship.
Will Wade's buyout terms
A key element of the agreement is the buyout structure. If Wade were to leave NC State before April 1, 2026, he would owe the school $5.3 million. That buyout drops to $3 million beginning April 1, 2027, decreasing further later in the contract.
Wade’s arrival in Raleigh also triggered a buyout with his previous school. After compiling a 50-9 record in two seasons at McNeese, NC State paid a $1 million buyout to secure his release from the Southland Conference program.

Despite speculation linking Wade to a potential return to LSU, where he coached from 2017 to 2022, Wade dismissed the rumors and reiterated his commitment to NC State. Now with the Pack losing in the First Four round to Texas, Wade future seems uncertain with LSU's situation unresolved under Matt McMahon.
