The BYU Cougars have a top NBA draft prospect in freshman AJ Dybansta. But he does not have the March Madness supporting cast he may have expected.
Unfortunately for Dybansta and BYU head coach Kevin Young, the Cougars are playing without Richie Saunders during the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Saunders was averaging 18.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists with 1.7 steals per game before an injury ended his season.
He last played against Colorado on February 14 when he tore his ACL in his right knee during the first minute of the game.
Despite the injury, Saunders is rated at No. 55 overall among all draft prospects in the consensus big board from Rookie Scale.
BYU is also without Dawson Baker due to a season-ending injury. Brody Kozlowski, KJ Perry, Nate Pickens and Xavion Staton are also listed as out during their tournament debut against Texas at 7:25 p.m. ET in Portland, Ore.
