It's not an overstatement to say that Mitchell Robinson is a huge X-factor for the New York Knicks ahead of the 2026 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, which is why the center's injury is a big focus ahead of Game 1.

The center reportedly fractured the pinkie on his right hand (it was specifically the fifth metacarpal, if you're scoring at home), and initially he had no timetable for his return after he underwent surgery last week.

But then there was some talk that he was trying to play in Game 1, which would be vital. He's come off the bench to replace Karl-Anthony Towns and has been his usual elite defensive self, cleaning up the glass on both ends and playing well against opposing big men (he'd definitely play minutes against Victor Wembanyama) and slamming some lobs on the offensive end.

So what's the latest? Glad you asked. Here's what we know:

Will Mitchell Robinson play in Game 1? What's his injury status?

He's listed as questionable for Wednesday night, but ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Robinson "is resolute" in playing. We'll see if he gets cleared.

There's also ESPN's Vince Goodwill, who said "We know that he's going to play."

How did Mitchell Robinson injure his hand?

Shams:

Charania reported that the "details are murky" and that he hurt himself at his own home, not during a game in the Eastern Conference Finals as some thought.

How did Mitchell Robinson look in practice before the NBA Finals?

He was out there shooting the ball and had his hand wrapped at certain points. And then there's this:

Does shaking hands with someone imply he's ready to go in what should be a physical series that could be rough on a hand that was recently repaired surgically? We'll see.
