Editor’s note: With several sports going on, Wildcat Wrap serves as a recap that focuses on the Arizona programs that we do not have the time to cover on a regular basis but are certainly worthy of recognition.
A pair of Arizona assistant coaches across different sports have received well-deserved promotions.
Women’s tennis’ Jamie Schroer has been promoted to associate head coach, UA head coach Ryan Stotland announced this week.
Schroer has spent the last four seasons on the Arizona staff, including the last three as an assistant coach.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue to help develop this program and reach new highs,” said Schroer. “Growing up in Tucson, the University of Arizona has always been home and I am thankful to work alongside our incredible student-athletes and staff. A special thank you to Coach Stotland for the constant support. I am excited for the future of this program as we build on our recent success and compete at the highest level. Bear Down.”
Schroer is credited with guiding Josie Usereau, Martyna Ostrzygalo and four other Wildcats to All-Big 12 honors. Last season Arizona reached a national ranking of No. 26, the program’s highest since 2012.
Stotland said Schroer has been a “wonderful addition” to the program.
“Ever since she has come back home to Tucson, all we have done is get better and better,” Stotland said. “Her knowledge combined with her intelligence and her caring and compassionate nature make her the best fit for any program and we are lucky to have her. Her evolution as a coach has been fun to be part of. She just continues getting better and better and I am excited that she is continuing to be part of this wonderful journey. There is no one more deserving of this role than Jamie.”
Arizona track and field’s Gabriel Mvumvure also received a promotion, being named associate head coach. Wildcats head coach Andrew Dubs announced the promotion this week.
Mvumvure led the Arizona sprinters group, which set several school records this season on the men’s and women’s sides. Three of Mvumvure’s athletes earned All-American honors, including Mason Lawyer, who finished in the top nine in the men’s 100m dash and 200m dash at NCAA Oudoor Championships.
“Coach Gabu has had a tremendous and immediate impact on not just our sprints group but the entire program. He is able to relate and connect across all event groups with his leadership and outgoing personality,” Dubs said. “I couldn’t be happier for him to take this next step as our Associate Head Coach and look forward to more championship and record breaking performances for years to come.”
