Patrick Kane
Patrick Kane went from hero to goat for the Detroit Red Wings in a matter of less than two minutes on Sunday.
Just 1:47 after tying the score at 4-4 with his 15th goal of the season, Red Wings forward Kane needlessly tripped Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes as he was going to the bench at the end of a shift.
Kirill Kaprizov completed his sixth career hat-trick on the ensuing power play to give the Wild a 5-4 victory.
Defenseman Albert Johansson gave the Wings a 1-0 lead before the game was two minutes old.
Then the game went completely wild. Minnesota scored four unanswered second-period goals. Not yet done, the Red Wings rallied with three third-period goals to knot the count.
Matt Boldy tied the score with his 41st of the season. Then Kaprisov sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by former Red Wings forward Vladimir Tarasenko.
Defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored his seventh goal of the season for Detroit in the third period. Goals by JT Compher and Kane followed to tie the score at 4-4.
After allowing a goal on the first shot of the game, Minnesota’s Filip Gustavsson stopped 17 of the next 21 shots for his 28th win of the season.
Making his first start in Detroit’s goal since March 2, Cam Talbot made 15 saves. He’s 1-3-3 in his last seven decisions.
So much for home-ice advantage. Detroit has lost four in a row at home in regulation . . . The Red Wings are 0-2 since center Michael Rasmussen returned to the lineup following a nine-game absence with a lower-body injury . . . Defenseman Justin Faulk and forward Mason Appleton were out of the Red Wings lineup through injury . . . Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot played in his 800th NHL game.
Just six seconds after killing off a slashing penalty to Sandin-Pellikka, the Red Wings surrendered the 3-1 goal to former teammate Tarasenko.
It was his 22nd goal of the season. Tarasenko scored 11 goals for Detroit last season. He was traded to Minnesota in the offseason.
The Red Wings opened the scoring just 1:40 after the opening faceoff when Johansson scored his third of the season.
It was only the fifth first-period goal for Detroit over the past 13 games. And it was just the sixth time in the last 17 games that the Red Wings scored first.
The Red Wings continue their final homestand on Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets in a key matchup in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race. It’s a 7 p.m. ET start.
